Best broad beans?

I was put off broad beans many years ago, by having them served "shelled" like peas. I hated them, and so quickly forgot that, as a child, we used to eat them WITH the pods, really young.

So ... I'm planning to try growing some for the first time. What's the best variety for eating young in this way? Or doesn't the variety make a blind bit of difference?

We have just bought some seeds from Moles.Good for planting now, only grow about 3ft.Called The Sutton.Never tried them before, but the shorter variety is better for our allotment.

The problem with the sutton is, they take up as much room as a tall variety but have so few beans per pod. I prefer a taller variety and stake then to within an inch of their lives Smile

We grow the Sutton every year for it's wind-proof-ness. We give loads to my neighbour - he eats them young and raw, pods and all. Don't like the furry-ness meself (or the taste, much Razz ), but they crop much better here than peas, so I'll take what I can get! Think that all the varieties we've tried have tasted better while they're really small though (before the beans get their leather jackets on), but OH doesn't like to pick them so early (it's a waste, apparently Rolling Eyes )

aquadeluce spp? has worked well for me in several locations ,i plant nowish in hoop and plastic cloches (very cheap)open cloches in early spring, crop april/may
they will work without cover but cover seems to be better
ps the furry slimy stuff one can scrape from the inside of a pod seems to remedy warts in seveal species including humans.scrape ,apply a few days running ,wait ,job done

Thanks Smile I'll give them a try. I'll try both varieties, maybe one this year and the other next year and see what does best here.

I've been quite tempted to try growing Stereo because it's widely touted as a "mange tout" variety. I'm not sure if that's because it lacks fibres etc as you get with mange tout peas, but it might be worth having a look at.

I'm growing Sutton, Aguadulce claudia and Bunyards Exhibiton. Sutton for me has a superior flavour to Aguadulce, but as I understand it Aguadulce is that little bit more hardy. I'm growing all my beans over winter this year.

Thanks Bugs Smile
