Bid4bees

Yesterday I met a lovely chap, who lives nearby.
He has set up a web/auction site for all things bee. He tells me the site has been up and running for about 3months and already has almost 700 members. He makes hives, nucs and does courses too!

I told him about Downsizer, which he hadn't heard of, and I said I would tell you about his site.

Hopefully he will pop over and join up here too.

Any hoo it's

and if you haven't already come across the site, go take a looksee Wink

Pah! I met him at the Smallholders Show and suggested he take a look at the forum. Wink

He probably didn't recall the name of the site when I mentioned it, but whether. he did or not, I know he's very busy trying to get his business going and is trying hard to eek out a living like the rest of us.

Please give him a break if he does come online.

Oh absolutely. I wasn't having a go at him.

Had a look at his site. Thought the varroa vaporizer was interesting - watched the video. Any other beekeepers got any views on this? Tavascarrow?

Had the bee inspector last year to do Oxalic acide treatment on my hives. The whole club had the treatment with mixed results. Some older members not keen on the thing and thought it did more harm than good.

Is he connected with the Bid4Poultry people, do you know? They have cross-links.

I haven't used oxalic acid but from what I've read it's effective but if not used correctly can be harmful to the bees too.
Little worried about the quantities he uses in the video, three heaped spoons of oxalic acid is nearer to 20 grams not 3.5 as stipulated & that quantity will kill a lot of bees.
Also its corrosive to metal hive parts.
But if used correctly at the right time of year it's proven to work.
I think down here in the deep South West we would be better using it Nov/Dec not October as stipulated.
Thornes sell an electrically heated vapourizer which is possibly easier to use but a lot dearer

Steve - had the same thoughts myself. (By the way your Welsummer cock is doing well - plumped up a bit and looking good with the 4girls)

Im starting to feed up now - wondered if i should put varroa strips in before or after (or during) feed. I think previous yrs Ive done during, but am worried Im tainting the stores
