Bike seats for childrenI need to get a bike seat so that I can carry my little boy around town, he's currently coming up for two and I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations for bike seats or trailers for children.
My current thinking is that one of those little trailers would be best as I assume they give more protection from the elements and as I will have a bag with me I wont keep swiping him as I cycle along. Also when he isn't in it it may give me a little more carrying capacity for trips to the garden centre.
Any advice greatly appreciated!

Trailers are a lot better for the cyclist (more stability, you can carry other stuff in them). But, if you're a two year old and stuck in one you have almost no view and it's very boring.

Good point about it being boring for the child - I need an 'in bike DVD system' powered by a dynamo!
Journeys will be fairly short (about 2 miles) so may not be a problem, thanks for the advice.

Have used the trailer for little ones and it is good. Got seats to go on the back of our bikes later. I found it made me feel very unstable, and it was difficult to get started. That may have been cos my bike is a bit big, and I have to tilt it to get on. Then with the weight of the child it nearly fell over. OK once I got going.
Where are you - ours are not used now - we may be able to do a deal
Andrea.

Thanks for the offer - 'fraid I was in a bit of hurry and got one on the way home from work - I just hated having to spend ages driving into work! Went for a trailer in the end.
Shame I have relatives in Suffolk who could have picked it up for me!

Well, get in touch when child is too big for the trailer - we will no doubt still have the seats

carrying on with the theme! We have a bike trailer for our 2 toddlers, (one aged 3 and a half and one aged 2 and a quarter) and they are rapidly growing out of it. My bike won't fit a bike seats (apparently a large number of ladies won't?!) so it looks like my husband will have to get a bike seat and use that and the trailer to take the children to the child minders. We have been offered a tagalong but think not yet 4 is too young - unless anyone can suggest anything to help??

You can get devices called 'ride-alongs"; basically the back half of kid's bike that bolts onto your frame - they get the help peddle too!

We have a Trailgator which is a pole that fixes between my bike and the boy's. It lifts the childs front bike wheel off the ground. It has the advantage that during a ride the bike can be rode separtally.

I'm not sure that 3 is old enough for either of those though?

Depends on how big/co-ordinated your child is really.
