Birdwatching app

What do you use to quickly identify that small brown bird with a fluting call, a grey cap and a touch of white under it's wing as it flies away from you?
Gervase

I use iBird, the UK and Ireland Guide to Birds. Pretty good - it has pictures, descriptions and recordings of the calls. There's a free, Lite version and a paid-for version with every bird you're likely ever to see, including all the confusing little brown jobs.
Cathryn

Thank you Gervase, I was just looking at that one.

Some IT ignorant questions... is it only for the iphone? Once it's a downloaded you can use it anywhere, signal or not? Can I share it between my nexus tablet and nexus phone.
Gervase

Sadly, I think it's just for the iPhone. On my phone I can use it anywhere; the whole app is stored on the phone, so all the details are are accessible even in the middle of nowhere. I mean, we all can hear the deranged cry of the curlew-with-piles out in the boondocks. And be able to distinguish it from thrush...
Sorry, I'll get me coat. Good app though...

A book.

I was thinking that too. Or try to remember or photograph bird and have a look on computer later. My phone does phone calls.
Cathryn

I appreciate the book thing but I try to have my phone on me most of the time, even though there is no signal whatsoever on any part of the farm currently. So I would have phone, camera, binoculars and a book. The book doesn't have sound.

Anyway, it seems I will stick with the book until my daughter decides to upgrade her current iphone.

Yes, but Cathryn has a modern phone, and it isn't even tied to a cable anymore. She can take it outside and all sorts. Technology, eh?

Yeah, technology. Cathryn carries her 'phone with her all the time - but it doesn't work anywhere on her farm, so she might as well unplug her old fashioned telephone and carry that with her for all the good it will do! Wink Wink

Oddly, it works sometimes in some places. I just hope that the urgent need to have the farmer and the muscle coincides with the right time and place. sean

If you bought a set of Very pistols you could be sure of getting his attention *and* identify the bird from the fragments of its corpse.
