I once read that if you put some boiling water in a bottle, to the level you want the bottle broken at, then put that into a bowl with icy water, it will break at that point. Cheaper, but a lot more dangerous if it goes wrong.

Sterillizing a demi jon last week i poured in some boiling water and the bottom cracked off perfectly! Atouch big for a wine glass, even for me, so i thought it would make a good cloche!

I've got a cloche made that way, also accidental, but its a great cloche. Wouldnt mind some more like it

That looks really good, and there are some interesting things further down the page as well.

A bit pricy I've seen other versions half the price. A good idea though.

Sounds much safer than how I was told to do it - pour in petrol to the point you want it to break, then stick a hot poker into the bottle
Needless to say, I didn't try it!

Bottle Cutter KitI got a bottle cutter kit from Creative Glass Guild in Bristol, its great!! I am now chopping up my wine bottles as soon as they are empty...this is happening slightly quicker than it used to!
I make stained glass so use the offcuts to make a mosaic and stick on to the bottle after i cut it to make bright candle holders etc.
This is the cutter i got:

Its pretty sturdy and i find it easy to use, hope it helps someone else too!!!
