Brazing.

Anyone here know owt about it?
Is a carbon arc torch a good way to go?
vegplot

I used oxy-acetylene but oxy-propane or just plane propane is good as well. Motorcycle manufactures used to braze frames over a charcoal or coke forge.

bright cherry hot is plenty hot so even a simple gas blowlamp will do for smallish stuff

cleaning and fluxing is an art to practice

brazing is fairly easy

Don't think I've ever managed cherry hot with my simple blowlamp...
Mistress Rose

Depends what you want to braze. I did it with microelectronics and you certainly didn't use oxy-acetylene for that. Very Happy

Unless its very big stuff carbon arc might be a bit fierce from my limited experience of using it many years ago.

Or can you now get more controllable carbon arc set ups?

If nothing else, you can at least get a magic mask now so you can see what you are doing.

if you use refractory material to contain the heat around the work a simple gas blowlamp can easily get bright cherry

i use a blowlamp for gold/silver which melt hotter than yellow brass

What sort of thing will work as refractory material?
Or where do I get some?

the ceramic bits out of a scrap gasfire are ok for light use but tend to break fairly soon

refractory bricks can be got from jewelry making suppliers

if really going low tech an old plant pot can be broken into bits that will contain the heat

Gwynedd Welding Supplies in Gaerwen sells flux but they're a pretty hopeless bunch.

I know I don't always keep my profile up to date, but just now it is accurate...

There is no call for that attitude.
