Broadband connection???Broadband has just arrived in our village, actually beat the gas which is still not available!
I want to sign up and get a connection.
Can anyone recommend a supplier?
What are BT like?
Any discounts/deals done for business connections, which is what ours would be?
Any tips/ideas gratefully received, thanks,
Wombat

BT and pipex get consistently good ratings as suppliers. BT have upgraded to 2mbs recently. Dunno about deals for business I'm afraid.

There have been some questions on broadband ISPs so here's a site than rates them http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

www.eclipse.co.uk are very good. In a comparisment I checked (sorry, forget which site offered the 'Which' type test) BT/eclipse/Wanadoo/Tiscali and eclipse came out tops on all counts. I just got broadband at last, and pay about the same now for my broadband (£15) as I did with Tiscali Anytime, where I was constantly cut off after 2 hours, and had a low speed conection. If my line was up to it, the £15 would do 2MB for that price. There is a bandwidth limit on that package, but another £2-3 would give you unlimited bandwidth. Believe they do business deals too. Technical problems can be sorted free on the telephone (standard landline, no premium rate) and the service is very good and prompt. It had been recomended to me by someone who has been with them for a while who is very satisfied. I think its a family business, or started out that way. Eclipse are also technically at the helm, and were involved in the long distance trials.

I've been with BT Broadband for a couple or three years, never had a problem. Help desk is really helpful when needed too.

I use BT Broadband but a number of the techy guys here at work use metronet http://www.metronet.co.uk - which work on a pay as you go model - basically you pay a minimum fee per month - think its £11.70 for 1mb and with that you get 1Gb download per month then you pay so much per mb upto a maximum of about £22 (which is about the same as BT) - so far they are all raving about it - even big downloaders are paying on average a lot less per month - infact once they match BT on 2mb I'm thinking of changing to them

Oh and the other good thing about them is that you only have to take out a 3 month contract rather than the 12 months people like BT lock you into

Thanks all for your input.
I will now try to find the right one for me.

Well I am with Wanadoo, very helpful, very nice, price okish. set my mum up with BT and the poor woman has had nothing but trouble. She gets logged off after a few minutes, the modem they sent her wouldn'twork from the get go and I sepnt hours on the phone trying to get her a new one which I was told we'd have to pay for despite the original one never working in the first place. I refused to give BT any more money and went to pc world and got one. The help desk treated both me and my mother like idiots, were extremely rude, and now to add insult to injury she recieved her phone bill to find she'd been billed for the broadband connection in her phone bill as well as by direct debit from her bank account each month!!!! It has taken weeks to sort that muddle out as well. I wouldn't touch bt with a barge pole again. As soon as her year contract is up I'm switching her to wanadoo as well.

Have to say that I have been with BT for about three years and BY Broadband for the past 4 months and they have always been very good. The helplines are excellent.
The only thing I didn't likr was the BT Broadband modem, it has a usb connection to the computer which is OK if you use just the one, but I have three logged on to the same account and even using the BT voyager, the modem was redundent.

You really should think about a firewall/router with an always on broadband connection, especially if you have more than one computer to attach.

USB is a right pain for a broadband connection

I now use the BT Voyager 2100 router which has a built in firewall and it is excellent, just a pity that the supplied modem is now redundent!

Well I eventually went for BT Broadband, £17.99/month.
Set it up myself, not too difficult, they were two days late getting the line set up, which caused a few hours of phone calls pushing and enquiring.
Now only problem I have is that my ISP is Wanadoo, so emails are received but cannot send any.
Anyone got any ideas how this can be sorted, please
Thanks, slightly frustrated,
Wombat
PS the twin lambs born on friday and the single lamb last night have calmed me down somewhat

Do you see any error message on sending?

Yes below error message.

Sounds like what it says on the box a problem with the recipient.
Try sending me an email webmaster@downsizer.net

Same problem Jema.

To fix this problem:
* Open Outlook Express, and click Tools
* Then click on Accounts
* Then click on your connection and click Properties
* Then click Advanced
* On this screen remove the checks from the boxes This server requires a secure connection for both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3).

There are no ticks in the boxes.

Well the other cause of this is:
"Make sure you are not trying to send e-mail while connected to another ISP."
So do you need to change to the new ISPs setttings for sending mail.

Congrats on the lambs. Have you tried talking to BT support?

Does BT's help tell you how to configure email? I think you need to point Outllok at BTs smtp server
|
Wombat

In Outlook Express I had to change the connection, under Tools, Accounts, Connection, to BT Broadband as when connected to BT Broadband I could not send nor receive messages when trying to connect to Wanadoo.
I will try BT support, just get fed up with so many numbers to press, thats why thought I would try here
Thanks so far,
Wombat

I don't use Outlook anymore (converted to Thunderbird) but I think you need to go:
Tools>>Accounts>>Highlight Account Name>>Properties>>Servers Tab>>
Try putting your old server settings in there, and then the new ones.

After waiting 42mins for BT support to answer phone, I now have the answer.
Outgoing Server had to be changed to:- mail.btinternet.com
Hope this might help anyone else with same problem

Sorry I wasn't around earlier. The error message is unhelpful, because Outlook isn't expecting the situation when your mail sending server simply says "Can't or Shan't" every time... (You'd get exactly the same message if you left the @ out of an address...)
The general situation you bumped into was "trying to send mail via one ISP's mail computer, while using a different ISP for internet connection".
They don't let you do that without permission, because that's exactly what a spam sender would be trying to do.
However, people that travel (particularly internationally) need a way round this problem.
That's what the "Authentication" options on the "Advanced" tab are for. So that you can"log in" to *send* mail, (ordinarily, one needs to "log in" to *receive* mail).
Some ISPs (including I thought BT/Yahoo) now require Authentication to send, even when connected to the internet by BT/Yahoo...
You mentioned something about "changing" the mail server name... Hmm. What you should do is *add* an account with the BT details, (and make it the 'default' account), but keep the freeserve(?) account settings, so that, for the moment, you can keep on collecting mail sent to your (existing, known) freeserve(?) address *as_well_as* your new BT address. (I'd expect that turning on authentication would allow you to continue sending from freeserve(?), if there was any reason you might want to...)

Thanks Dougal, think I'm with you.
I suppose now that I have BT Broadband and the posibility of 5 email addresses free, I no longer require Freeserve/Wanadoo ISP, do I, at £14.99 a month?
As shouldn't I be able to set up new email addresses and use that with BT?

Yes

Yes, but as of today, anyone that has your email address has your freeserve one. During the transition period, while you update downsizer, etc, and tell all your friends, acquaintances, mailing lists, suppliers, customers, internet shops, etc you will need to collect from **BOTH** BT and freeserve.
This is achieved by setting up a *new* account, rather than "changing" the details, so you can collect mail from both accounts.
Cancel your freeserve subscription when you think that no one that matters would still try and use that address... (Do they still do pay as you go? It might be possible to keep that account/mailbox going more cheaply...)

Problem is that standard smtp port is 25. The new authentication uses port 587. Change this in Outlook email settings, more settings, advanced.

Sorry, You need to find out which port freeserve smtp server uses. 587 is BT.

Thanks for your helpful comments Oldboy, but..
Actually that wasn't his problem.
Reading on, you'd have discovered that Wombat had changed ISPs, without appreciating the need to change *anything* to continue *sending* mail using his former ISP's server. (Which he didn't seem to realise at the time that he was still trying to do...)
Sending using the new ISP's sever sorted the problem...
The occasions when Authentication would be specially required were also mentioned.

Andrew, thank you.
I'd just like to make clear that rabbit skinning is not compulsory, thank heavens!
However the diversity of the site, and the residents, is such that many, many subjects are encompassed.
I'd like to hope that someone nice enough to post such a "thank you" would stick around, and even join in.
