BT weird thing going on

Any BT engineers in the house?!

All my landline phones are dead (we have four scattered around the house) and when i try to call my home number from the mobile it goes straight onto BTanswerphone (which would indicate someone is on the 'phone at that time).

The strange thing is, here I am, on the same phoneline with an internet connection........ Shocked

I just can't figure out what is going on. I unplugged all the 'phones in the house and plugged one into the socket the router is plugged into, but it's still dead.

Am I missing something obvious? this seems very curious to me - clearly I am not getting a signal if someone tries to call me and I cannot make any calls.

Have you got a mobile to ring BT with?

yes ( Embarassed I found it uncharged underneath a pile of stuff). I need to call them and ask for an explanation then?

If you go to the BT home page, there's a report a fault bit. That's always been pretty good for me to work out what the fault is, or at least where it is. They can pinpoint if it's a line, exchange, handset, house, or whatever problem.

BT are actually pretty good when it comes to fault diagnostics and even fixing.

hate to suggest this, but having done it myself Embarassed are you sure you have paid your bill? If your internet connection is a freephone number you may find that you can dial out to it on one line. We have 2 lines here, diff nos, they managed to cut one off but nt the other totally, callers in got the answerphone message. Took ages to work out that they'd not cashd the cheque I sent Embarassed

Very Happy no need to blush for your suggestion ros, and yes, you made me stop and think for a moment, but the bill is paid.
The line is completely dead and I believe if you're cut off for non-payment you still get a dial tone and you can call emergency services? is that right??

Thanks for the fault-finding tip alert Nick. We're going to check some more stuff out tomorrow. I'm loathed to call a BT engineer because if they arrive and the fault is in the house, they'll charge us, so we'll do what we can ourselves first......the lines to the house have been in as long as the house has stood I think, so i'm feeling fairly confident the problem is not in the house. Just want to rule everything else out first!

The online thing will tell you if it's in the house, or not. Yes, they'll charge you if, you've for example, damages the box inside the house, but otherwise, it'll point it you at the right place.

They don't tend to send out engineers unless they are needed, to be honest.

Thanks for all your help folks.
We located the fault ourselves - we have squeaky floorboards on the landing and over time a telephone wire had become trapped under a loose board. The protective wire coating had worn away and two wires were just touching.......

ANyway, problem solved.

Thanks again Smile
