Building with straw

Hi all,
I want to rebuild my small storage barn and would like to use bales of straw for it's construction. Has anyone got any advise on courses I could go on or books covering the subject. I'm interesed on what you actually cover the bare straw with, is it something like a mud/clay/plaster mix?

Thanks

It's usually Lime rendered, have a look at the Events Calendar, i'm sure I listed a few courses on there. If not then have a look here:

Try the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT)

It's actually well worth looking at the appropriate section of web Links on the home page, there's loads of ecofriendly building stuff on there

try also this very informative website on green building techniques

If you are going to invest a great deal of time, money and effort, a book is a very small investment, and would make tings a lot easier, and maybe save you from mistakes. Try the library, and ask them to get something on strawbale building if they don't have anything, and there is the inter library lending service.

Anybody got a link or info on the rough costs of straw bale construction?

Cheers

I have a traditional pole barn with tin roof which has lasted for years, but I use giant heston straw bales to create the walls. They last about six to seven years, then I replace them. Not really a straw building, but it works well for us. (you need a forklift to move them)

That eco house that looked a bit like a hobbit hole we were looking at the site for a few weeks back was something like £3k all in wasnt it, that was straw bale and turf roof I think.

So if I search for 'hobbit' I'll get the info I want. Why didn't I think of that! Laughing

Upping this cos I've just found out that my new (almost) neighbours-to-be worked with the lady who advised on the construction of the straw building on Grand Designs, they appear to run a course:

There's a nice slideshow of the building of the Natpro headquarters here http://www.natpro.be/pdf/NP.pps
280m², using 650 bails of straw, total cost €140,000.

Construction is timber frame + straw + concrete + facing.

No roof then? Wink

Thanks for the links.
