aww sorry to hear that Helen, it's really horrible and worse if you don't know what happened too.
Our little tiny rescue cat disappeared 8 weeks ago and we never found her, dead or alive. I still look out for her every morning.

Rescue cat - have you checked with the council? Their bin men are supposed to report picking up bodies.
We had a rescue cat run off on us - emerged he was basically feral but we weren't told when we took him on, just later. (Never went to THAT rescue centre again.) Couple of sightings but never caught up with him. He was chipped but we were not ever contacted. (Half his family ran off from their new homes too.)
Chickens - we lost our best hen on the weekend. She wasn't there in the evening, searched everywhere by torchlight as there was the offchance she'd gone broody on a hidden nest. Found the feather explosion in reeds up in our field two days later. Bought her a year ago, good layer, excellent mother, bossy character. At least we have lots of her offspring.
Horrible when they go like that.

Our neighbour's cat, Sampson dissapeared a year ago so we all thought he was dead or gone for good. Then we found out what happened to him! http://news.stv.tv/scotland/east-central/123179-missing-cat-turns-up-after-a-year-500-miles-from-home/
Just shows that they can turn up when least expected.
Helen, I hope you find your hen yet.
