Can anyone make me a felt hat?I want a felt hat in brown or natural shade, a bit like a floppy indiana jones style hat - is anyone up for a commission for one or maybe two of these?

I have a hatblock for a fedora, in terms of work and fibre its the same as doing one of my pointy hats, so if that appealed you could order through my shop under the custom pointy hat option but specify a fedora instead Can do any colour you like, different shades in the same hat, or named sheep breed wool if it tickles your fancy even

'Yes' would have sufficed.

well, I reckoned he'd need an idea of what I could do so that when the rest of the mad hatters on the site also offer their services its clear what everyone does differently

Sally, you are definitely top of the mad hatters. And no one else has the faintest clue what you're talking about!

I knew I would end up asking this. What the blazes is a fedora? (the first time, I read Sally's post as spicy fedoras! Sounds like Mexican food, to me!)

Can you make felt waterproof, it would be nice and warm already, wouldn't it. Just asking, obviously.........

yes and no, anything made of felted wool is pretty weatherproof in as much as it takes ages before you feel wet in it, but felt can get a bit droopy in heavy rain and will need patting into shape and drying out carefully to avoid it changing shape too badly. I did someone an all terrain pointy hat a couple of years back (last I head they were systematically climbing every mountain in new Zealand wearing it ) and used a tough Gotland wool then also scotchguarded it after it was finished to help prevent that first damping down in a shower. Seemed to do the trick

In that case, I clearly need a felted to fit walking hat. A nice red one. I'll add it to the list. I wonder what the neighbours would say if I walked the dogs in my pointy hat...........

believe me, they'll get used to it
What a serious felt hat wearer really needs is a decorative yet functional hat block in the right headsize, the idea being when you wander in with a soggy hat of any description, you can pop it to dry on something that will still be the right size when it dries out.

I'm not sure himself would get used to it. I really need to move to somewhere less populated! Now, about this hat block, I think I used a rugby ball in a plant pot, not exactly decorative! I wonder what else I could convert?

I'll have a look and get back to you Sally - what information would you need - suppose it's in the ordering instructions?

Is your head rugby-ball shaped then?
|

Possibly. It's certainly not pointy-hat shaped!
