Cant access Word....For some reason I cant open any Word documents, and when I click on the icon it starts to open but then says its not responding. Excel etc open fine.
Since Word is the main application I use, I really need it, plus I need to be able to access what I've already got saved in Word.
What can I do?? I hope theres some way of sorting this out...

Not sure I can help much but what operating system do you use and do you have auto-updates turned on? It could be one of the updates has caused a problem and could be rolled back.

I've got vista, but I installed the word, excel etc myself from a disc, an older version, cant remember for sure now which version it is. It worked fine till a week or so ago though.
Not sure re. auto updates...

Or you could try opening your document folder and double clicking on the document you want and see if this opens the program.

Yeah I've tried that and get the 'not responding' thingy.

Try looking at the event log for any relevant information.
Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Event viewer
expand 'Windows logs' and open 'Application logs'. Look for entries with a 'Warning' or 'Error' label.

When I go to Control Panel, I dont have an Administrative tools option

Would I be able to install that on top of the Office2000 I have at the moment?

Open Office should be able to be run alongside MS Office.
Since Word was working have you installed anything else? I don't use Vista but a quick google shows that Word can automatically update and that can cause problems that you describe.
Do you have anyone who can take a look at the PC to see if you have automatic updates turned on? If you can find what may have caused the problem there's often a fix on Microsoft's web site, it's just identifying what may have happened. There should be something obvious in the control panel.

I've been looking at the updates.... it seems a security update for MS Office 2007 was installed on 14th Oct... which may be around the time my Word stopped working properly, I'm not sure. Could this have affected my Word 2000 do you think?

If you've not done anything like install software recently then it sounds very likely.
Does the update give you a reference number at all, I've had a quick google but couldn't find anything.
If you're confident you data is backed up I'd be tempted to roll back that fix if it's possible. Might be best waiting to see if anyone else has some advice.

You might need to switch to classic view. An alternative is to click the Start button (Windows logo bottom left) select All Programs and Administrative tools should be one of the folders.

Yes. This is what Microsoft say about it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972581/
| Quote: | Known issues with this security update
After you repair the Office Compatibility Pack (MOC.exe) or install an update to Office Compatibility Pack, the file type associations with Office Compatibility Pack or with other Office applications may be removed and must be recreated. |
Which doesn't seem to be your problem. I'm a bit confused as it says it's only for Office 2007.

There was a pre-installed MS Office 60-day trial thingy on this laptop that I never used. I'm assuming the updates are linked to that.

You need to expunge any trace of Office 2007 first, I believe it's called Office 12 in the install.

Just had a thought... it couldnt be infected with a virus could it? I notice a virus scan is requested and then it stops responding...

What could happen if you installed openOffice? I have had it for ages and never a glitch. When I receive Word documents they open in Openoffice. When I send a Word document the receiver opens it in Word
