Carbon offsetting by planting trees not all as it seemsCarbon offsetting by planting trees not all as it seems
Been looking at this site
Link.
To offset the carbon from the UK we need a land mass 1.7 times what we have in the uk all planted with trees that dont get burnt or allowed to rot / decompose. They all need to be used for lumber etc.

Lets use our land to grow food and use the rainforest to grow trees and not the other way round.

Planting trees for offset reasons is bonkers, there is no real data to support it, still an excellent idea to plant em though.

Dunno, trees are certainly better than (watered, fed, and herbicided) flipping golf courses, reagrdless of whether you can grow food there or not.

CKR - Would you have all the woods cut down and the land turned into arable land?

Without trees our land won't grow food, the bare soils from large expanses of arable acres get degraded, windswept & washed down the rivers (and redeposited, reducing the river channels, resulting in more flooding of our farmland & urban areas).

The answer, as with almost everything, is balance.

Almost? or always?

Almost. Sometimes unbalanced things are great.

I'm not sure doing anything just for carbon offsetting is much use. As the article mentions "Is planting trees good? Of course. Will it save the planet? Not on it's own."
Trees can make a huge contribution to a more sustainable way of life in the use. They can, of course, provide fuel, food, building materials, habitat etc, etc.
