Castle Douglas Farmers Market

in the car park of the Douglas Arms Hotel (down the alley at the side, off the High Street)

Pork, beef and lamb from Solway Natives [group of 4 small rare-breed producers], cheese, bread, veg, cakes, preserves, smoked fish, eggs, and (of course) Southern Uplands Winery !

Good luck with it. Is this your first go at this venue?

It's the third market they've held in CD (this time round - their markets never seem to really get established, and fold quickly).

I had a stall at the second one in March, and plan to do most months.

CD gets more visitors than Langholm, and was designated 'Food Town' by the Council a few years back, though this has never really been capitalised on (and kind of implies that all other food in D&G is not very good)

Good luck! Hope you're busy with lots of customers.

I was meant to be in CD this Saturday but have had to change my plans. We could have had a South Scotland Downsizer local meeting!

Another month, maybe ?
We could have one anyway.
I've also been meaning to suggest a more general meeting for Scottish Downsizers, somewhere in the Central belt (for everyone's maximum ease/inconvenience), but can't think of anywhere to go thaht would be appropriate.

Hmmm - when's the Little Sparta Open day this year ?????
cassy

Sounds good! I've never been to Little Sparta, but would really like to.

Quick trawl through my bookmarks found Craigencalt Ecology Centre near Kirkcaldy. Not been there but might be another option.

What does everyone else think?

I'll be up your way at the end of July visiting relatives who are spread out along the south west coast; any suggestions for good food places to go to would be useful. I know one ot two but I expect there's quite a few tucked away in the hills!

PS I mean places to visit on while holiday not as part of your suggested meet up, although that would have been a nice thing to join in.

How did you get on gil?

gillyflower: I particularly like Kitty's Tearoom, New Galloway, more info. Everything is homemade, they have old china cups and saucers, a lovely friendly atmosphere, cakes served on cake stands, quiche to die for and the deserts are worth the journey alone (especially 'Sophie's Sin'! Very Happy ). Hope you have a great visit Very Happy

It went pretty well, considering it was chucking it down, and noone really showed up until about 11.30 (i.e. halfway through).

Currently selling more at CD than on home territory at Langholm. More money over west, and more visitors to the area wanting something regional / local to take home.

Thanks for that, Cassy. A nice drive over from Newton Stewart with some decent cake at the end of it - great afternoon out!

Wigwam Bakery in Creetown do good bread, but no idea whether they have a cafe as well.
The pub at Port Logan on the Mull of Galloway does good local food. Prices seemed reasonable, as I recall.

I don't get right out west that often.

Bump !

And it's Castle Douglas Farmers Market again this Saturday (tomorrow) 28th June, 9.30-1.30 in the car park of the Douglas Arms Hotel (down the ginnel next to the pub, off the High Street)

I'm going to miss it again (Bee Club)Rolling Eyes. Hope you have a good day!

Should we start a separate thread about a Scottish Downsizers meet up (as we've sort of hijacked your thread!)?

Little Sparta is open "Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons, 2:30-5pm, from 15th June to 28th September." We've missed the Garden of Cosmic Speculation for this year.
