Catching eels

Eels are a delicacy, not often found other than in expensive restaurants. Delicious smoked, so you can put your fish-smoking skills into practice.

But how to catch them ? Why not use the same methods as our ancestors did....

Fish (the other one) provides you with illustrated instructions for making
your very own eel trap

whose form follows its function, but is a thing of beauty in its own right. Get weaving !

BTW, once you've caught an eel using this trap (or any method) : what's the best and most humane way kill it ?

And what then ? Do you gut a fish that long, or what ?
sean

Decapitation?
And ISTR that you skin them first, then gut them.

Any uses for eelskin ? And if so, how to cure it ?
Nick

And can't you use eelskin for handbags, shoes and trousers, if you're Rawk Star?
tahir

Nah. I read it somewhere.
Jonnyboy

Whacking them on the tail rather than the head stuns them IIRC.
dpack

whack hard on head
nail head to post =brain death
skin from a circular skin cut around the "neck" and a lengthways skin slit along the body ,unroll to tail
they are ace smoked or stewed
a hessian sack with straw and offal will catch then
they are becoming rare Shocked

I posted this thread on another forum, I hope people find it of use.

First stage of eel catching put into action tonight.

Dig worms and chop them up. Stick them in one of kaz's pop socks while she isn't wearing them and put them in the eel trap for bait.

A nice walk down the fields with doodle and camera. The stream is at the bottom of this field.
My little legs hardly touched the ground.

Getting the trap ready to go into the stream

In it goes !

Its only a small stream but heres the trap snuggled on the bed with its entrance facing down stream. Hopefully the eels will get a whif of the chopped worms and be waiting for me in the morning.

Thats the theory only tomorrow will tell what happens in practice. Smile

There was still a bit of early morning mist on the hills as I made my way to the stream.
My catch for the day was this ! Not an eel but a four or five inch brown trout. The trout in the local streamst on the mountain top as I went down to the stream.

are very dark and anything over 1/2 lb is virtually black.

He was immediately returned after his photo call.My next venture will be to a local pond.

willding2007

all i asked for was some advice on how and where to set eel trap . not to much i thought
Bodger

You've asked for advice and have been given some . Your response to Fish was hardly appropriate or pleasant.
willding2007

i dont know if you read my initial question ? advice he sent was not relevant . i think you will find that my reply was a bit tongue in cheek, where as his was abusive .
Bodger

Did you read my initial advice ?
willding2007

new user to this site . sorry thought it was only for adults
sean

[mod hat on]Calm down a bit in here will you. People earlier in the thread had asked for advice on skinning/gutting. Nobody needs to be getting bent out of shape. Play nicely or you'll all have to go and share the naughty step.[/mod hat off]
willding2007

sorry about that , should not have got dragged in .
dpack

place can be varied
mouth of stream into sea
go inland via wet places
mill dam or garden pond
mobile and adaptable critters
flowing water or still water
river or canal or tank in a shop
if the bait can put scent downstream through an eely area is good
hook n bait works
take a cloth for handling
dpack

squid is good bait .off offal is good .dead things is what they want
i recon they eat a lot of squid at sea or maybe they wanted to but missed out until the found one in a sack or on a hook
congers are not like up yurr river eels ,they have big teeth and a robust attitude to those who would eat them and need hunting in a different way
willding2007

[thanks for tips. waiting for river level to settle before i set traps . dont want to keep eels just me and the kids were curious how many were about .may try and eat one but not too sure . would you recommend ]
