Chainsaw Advice needed please

Regrettably I let a friend use my chainsaw to take down a tree -

He said it just stopped after about 20 mins. The rope starter wouldn't pull - had a look - released it but the motor bit it ratchets to was stuck - released with only a small amount of pressure - now pulls OK but wouldn't start - replaced spark plug (due) - Still no start.

It turns out he had put straight forward 4 star in the tank and not a 4 star/oil mix as required. Drained the fuel now.

Q: what to do? is it gone for good ?
Q: Is it likely to be more than just putting in correct fuel?
Q: need to know what I am talking about when/if I take it for repair

Many thanks
vegplot

It's suffered a partial seizure. With no oil in the fuel to lubricate the cylinder/piston and other moving parts the piston is likely to have bonded with the cylinder. There will almost invariably be damage but the extent is difficult to determine without taking it apart.

Sometimes, if the seizure is slight, you can go on using it but it won't perform as before and you're likely to accelerate damage. Two strokes are sensitive beasts, my advice is to take it in for repair, which maybe more than the cost of a new chain saw, and hand your friend the resulting bill.

Get him to buy you a new one.

Unless its a top quality top of the range model its unlikly to be cost effective to repair it properly. A cheap repair might get it working but it will always be a pig to start & never work as it should. You are looking at a new barrel, piston, rings, ALL inner bearings, poss crank as well.

He has been a numpty (mind you if it was mine I would have made sure that he KNEW it took 2 stroke mix & if it came back busted or with straight fuel even in the tank he would be buying a new one) & now needs to pay the numpty tax.

More worrying is if he dint know it needed 2 stroke does he know how to use one safely?

Thanks for your sound advice - guess some lessons to be learnt here. Rolling Eyes Confused

Need to get it sorted - cheers.

All good advice there. Particularly worrying the thought of someone who doesn't know that a saw uses 2 stroke mix playing with one, I suspect he was lucky to only break the saw.

If you want to asses the degree of damage one thing you can do is remove spark plug put thumb over plug hole and pull starter cord gently. If all is well you should feel the compression, in fact it should almost force your thumb off the hole. if it just spins over easily without generating compression then rings and bore are well shot and it is undoubtedly the best option to throw it away. I have put new barrels and pistons on good saws, professional stihls and husqvarnas costing over £500 but I wouldn't bother on anything less.

I think we can say it's definitely dead....about as much suction as... Wink

New chainsaw it is then!
