Clay ovens

To avoid stealing Mochyn's hearth thread, and corrupt a few more people's non-existent spare time..........

Alan Scott, who wrote this book, seems to imply that's almost unfeasbly easy to build your own clay oven. I want to put one next the garage, but I fear for the garage (it's wooden!) Any ideas on a) whether it's really as easy all as that, and b) how far it might need to be from potentially combustible buildings?

Has anyone actually done it, or seen it done? What about air holes and chimneys and practical thermodynamics?

I have similar concerns re. building a smoker. That's one reason it hasn't been done yet...

As the external coat is often a mud/clay mix or lime it's best to keep it covered during the winter with a tarp. However, I'd be carefuil about using it in garage due to risks associated with fumes and carbon monoxide.

If you want to keep it sheltered using a shelter made from combustable materials then leave a gap of at least a foot between any hot surfaces and the shelter. There are building regs you can refer to on this for guidance.

You can do day courses at River Cottage and possibly CAT and LILI to build such ovens. Why not wait till spring and send Mr WW? In fact I'll send Mr G with him and that'll sort their birthday presents and you and me can have a day in the garden AND we'll get an oven. Its a win - win situation. Laughing
