cleaning woodburnersWhy won't my woodburner fit back together again ?
I took the hood and the fireback and wedges off to inspect / clean it.
And now it won't fit back together. Can't get the fireback to sit properly.
Hints, tips ?
Sympathy ?
At the moment, it's my only source of heating (and hasn't been working properly since last week, which is why I took it apart to have a look). Brilliant timing, eh ?
The only warm place in the house is the fermentation chamber.
Other than that, it's the old trick of putting the oven on with its door open; or just going to bed with a hot bottle.

We've just dismantled ours in the workshop and put it back together (including the flue which was caked in soot and tar!)......went back together ok glad to say.....Walk away, relax and try again is all I can suggest from this distance.
Does the fireback sit on supports?...was it wedged with something to make it sit straight and now that wedge has been cleaned away? The original fitting might have been slightly adapted by whoever installed it to make it sit correctly....
Good look - the fermentation chamber sounds fun

The wedges hold the fireback in place - they fit back on one side, but not the other

There would be room in there for me to sit on a wooden kitchen chair - along with about 70 gallons of wine and 40 pints of beer.

Sounds like heaven, although I'd probably fall off the chair pretty quickly. Good luck with getting the woodburner back together.

Oh no! LOTS of sympathy!
Does the fireback need some persuasion or gentle heating? I'm wondering if the parts have cooled down, contracted and now have a tighter fit than before?
It sounds stupid, but have you tried them on different sides and different ways round - maybe they only fit back one way. You have to go through the variations systematically though .
Do they need to go back in a certain order?
We're too far away to be much good to you, but you'd be very welcome to get warmed up. Hope you manage to keep warm in this weather.
Best of luck for getting to back together again.

I have the order of the parts right (put each one aside to the side it was from).
It's the fireback that's the problem - was maybe slightly warm when I took it out, but cold now - but anyway, it just won't go back into place - I can now see where exactly it should go - which was stopping the wedge and the hood fitting back, as it was slightly out whenI last tried.
Thanks for helpful suggestions and sympathy. Much appreciated !

How's it going Gil?
Did you manage to get it back together despite the broken thingy (don't know what one of them is )? And are you keeping warm enough?

She's taken refuge in the fermenting cupboard.

Well, it was lovely knowing her. I imagine she's gone for the winter, and possibly much of the spring then.

Main woodburner still [partially] in bits.
That fireback weighs a lot, especially at awkward angles.
The stove needs a bit of work, and flue needs swept.
Bit of a bummer, as it;'s the main heat source for the house in cold weather - the CH just takes the chill off the air.
@ Nick - Vermont Castings stoves are great, but more complicated than some others. And more expensive, seemingly.
@ cassy : an andiron is a built-in fire-dog that holds the wood from falling out
Heating oil arrived this morning, so CH again.
Been working in the kitchen most of today, with Rayburn going, so warm enough.
Managed to sort up the upstairs small woodburner yesterday and got it going, so some heat there.
It's been a wretchedly cold week without any heating. Really does make one feel dismal and weary.
