Climbing plant ID and controlTrying to clear up where an old 'fence' has blown down.... Only about 20 foot run but it consisted of half a dozen leylandii trunks with trellis nailed across ... with this climber all over it. It dies back in winter to ground level, then regrows in spring. New growth is purple-ish green with three pointed jagged leaves ( not dissimilar in shape to a certain fibre bearing 'herb'). But the roots! like a vipers nest of inch thick runners just under ground which dive down vertically at intervals. So far pick-axed out about a cubic yard of roots (from a 20' run). What is it? should I panic? is it time for napalm?

Any chance of a photo? I'm wondering clematis as a first guess. No - that wouldn't die right back.

from the description alone i'd guess either Hop or Virginia Creeper

Treacodactyl

Hops are related to hemp IIRC, and they can have purple shoots and when they find somewhere they like they can go mad and form very think vines.
Dee, does it smell hoppy at all and does it produce hops (female hop) or little green flowers (male hop)?
As for eradication I'd try and dig it out as best I could, easier said than done and it'll shoot from small pieces of root left behind...

Hmmm... could be a hop - think I may have seen some hops on that fence - but I hadn't thought that this monster could possibly be the same plant. Back to the pick-axe!
