Clipping a Chicken Wings ( One for Helen M )

The trick with clipping a chickens wings inorder to stop it from flying is to unbalance it. No ! Not by trying to convince it that its a duck Shocked but by only clipping one wing so that it struggles to get airborn. Smile

Here are a series of pictures showing how to do it. It really is a simple process that shouldn't cause either the chicken or the poultry keeper any distress.

Here you go thumbup

I told you that it was simple, just take your time doing it the first few times.

Some people leave the first few feathers un cut (as the first pic) as it gives a more balanced look to the bird afterwards. It does give them more chance of flying though.

Thanks from me too. I don't know if the birds we're getting will already be "done", but I'll ask before we bring them home.

Stupid question time. The feathers don't grow back between moults, do they?

If you are doing a number of birds make a mental note to which side your clipping & stick to it.
If you don't it's easy to pick the same bird up twice & clip both wings which will then allow the bird to balance in flight.
Now isn't the best time to clip as most birds will be moulting now & growing new feather.
If done in Oct/Nov it wont need doing again for another year.

The best time to clip wings is when you need to stop your birds from flying, I wouldn't do it otherwise. The bird that I'm clipping in the picture is a 14 week old pullet, so I'd be very suprised to see it come into moult any time soon. Chickens moult on age rather than the seasons, so there's not one particular time of year thats better for wing clipping than another.
Once you've picked up your chicken, its the work of a second or two to ascertain whether you've previously cut its wings before or not, so it really dosn't matter which wing you chose to trim.

I find the hardest part is catching the bird...
