Cockrells

Any way to stop them crowing, apart from ringing their necks?
chicken feed

i have found that if they are put away at night and shut away so long as they cannot stretch out too much (if you watch a cock bird he always stretches up prior to crowing) that solves a early morning wake up call but as for the day time try roasting them.

I have never found that restricting headroom works - a largefowl cock can crow in a pet carrier box, and I'm not comfortable with restricting them further than that for any length of time Confused

i dont mean restrict as in no room i mean dont give they a high perch in a high hen house i have 13 cock birds and they are all well looked after we just like to keep the noise levels down during the morning dawn it works for us and has done for many years.
my birds have never been in a cat carrier so i would not know if they can crow or not in one.
Ixy

yes, but if a cock can crow with the headroom available in a cat carrying box, how close to the ceiling would the perch have to be to stop him crowing? very close. so close as to render the perch useless really as he has to have room to jump onto the perch. If perches close to the ceiling worked, all hen huts would be like that and urban cockerels wouldn't be such an issue.

Our cockrel sleeps on the floor just doesn't bother with the perch at all, and it doesn't stop him crowing. Personally I like the sound and my nearest neighbours are 1/4 mile away so not a problem.

Random thought - they put hoods on birds of prey - anyone tried that on a cockerel?

(No desire to be the first to test it, I like having all my fingers.) Very Happy

if one has done an honest day's work it is easy to sleep near many boy chooks

often thought about it but never actually tried it - the comb could be problematic on some breeds?
mochyn

A hoos with a slit in the top for the comb?

And no, I can't knit one (the light would get through).
Ixy

well the problem I can foresee is the combslit letting light in...If it was silk though perhaps it could be made to accomodate the whole comb?

I'm still not knitting one.
