collecting/swapping bottles for re-use

At the weekend, I acquired 40 used beer bottles and 10 used champagne bottles, which was good. Washed them out, got foils and labels off, and stashed away for now.

Are Champagne bottles something that you would like people to save up for you, gil, if we're going to see you? I put several in the glass recycling skip today. Likewise oither bottles!

Not champagne bottles especially, as I don't make that much for myself. Just that these were there, and so I 'ad 'em. It was beer bottles I was really short of, for a special order, so I wanted them to be all the same shape.

Having said that, I will be very short of beer bottles after this order, so any 500ml rinsed-out empties would be appreciated.

So if anyone coming to the DS Food Weekend would like 6 matching clear glass champagne bottles [which will bottle a gallon of sparkling wine], I can bring them along.

Embarassed Um. We have quite a throughput of champagne bottles, so if anyone wants, I can stash them.

Do you reuse any type of used beer bottle? I've always only saved bottles that have had a live, bottle conditioned, beer in them assuming they are stronger. Thinking about it I expect they are much the same these days but wonder what other people save.

I always keep Grolsch type bottle with the swing top on them if I ever get hold of any. Much easier than faffing around with crown caps.

Gil, we have discovered that the cider bottles (from Lidl) are exactly like your beer bottles. Shall I bring them with me?

Yes, please, do bring my beer bottles, and the cider bottles [which may not be as heavy-duty/heavyweight as my beer bottles, which were designed for re-use].

Thank you, Cathryn Very Happy

We have used lidl cider bottles for beer and cider and they are fine.If you are serious user of crown caps then a bottling press [hand operated and similar to a drill stand] is a really good bit of kit.Ours adjusts for different height bottles and we buy the crown caps in large amounts.I now use beer bottles and crown caps for wine as well.
