Compost heap

Having a newly installed compost bin and an unruly hedge, and a daughter in the process of toilet training, I have today been cutting back the hedge while she played about digging up weeds and stuff.

When she needed to wee, I sat her on the top of the compost bin and she was quite happy with this arrangement.

I understood this was good for compost heaps.

It occurred to me afterwards that maybe I should check the validity of this, and that it isn't just some kind of garden myth intended to catch out the ignorant.

You're dead right - it's good for the compost. Wee is very nitrogen rich so a useful activator. If you are adding lots, dilute it with 20 parts water - but a toddler weeing on the heap occasionally is fine.

See http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/organicgardening/gh_comp.php for compost making instructions.

Its very usefull if you have to much "brown" ingredients (carbon rich, like hedge clipping). But if your compost bin is heavy on the 'green" ingredients (nitrogen rich, like lawn clippings), its best not to pee into your compost- you'll just make an anearobic, wet acid mush. In this case, if you want to use urine, dilute it in a watering can full of water & use as feed around the base of fast growing plants (tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes). Obviously, try to avoid watering the fruit that you'll eat!

& wait until your friends & neighbours have tasted the produce from your garden before you tell them how its grown.

thanks for the advice folks,

the bin is currently very heavy on hedge clippings so I'm glad I did it.
