Lots of different types.

Bucket & chucket. composting is remote from toilet

integral high tech, needs power but sepperates urine

long drop, deep lined hole with seat. designed correctly would almost never need replacing.

raised platform, posssibly made out of straw bales in a hollow block.

GOOGLE IS MY FRIEND

AS IS EBAY

Compost loo

We have somthing called Snurredass. Looks like a normal toilet in the bathroom but acts like a sort of longdrop with four chambers. When the first chamber is full, you turn it from underneath/outside to the next chamber. Sometimes bark is thrown in to speed up the process. By the time the fourth chamber is full, there is clean compost in the first.

Works incredibly well in a holiday cottage. There is a fan attached which is powered by a solar panel. Totally biodegradable, no chemicals, no smell.

However, all the info is in Norwegian. Ask if you are interested and I'll try to help you.

A second vote for the humanure handbook. Have used the setup and found it completely pleasant, no odor, etc...

There are some pretty interesting ones in Canada - and not just in homes but even in public buildings.

The only problem I always wondered about is what if you accidentally drop something down the toilet....

I'd hate to be your plumber if that's a problem for you now... Shocked

I'd imagine it would easier as you retrieve it from a fairly dry surface (sawdust if you go the humanure handbook route) and you could just clean and sterilize whatever you dropped!Laughing

No worse than dropping it down a normal toilet, at least it won't get so wet so quickly.

Well all the compost toilets I have seen involved a deep dark hole.... so that if you dropped something in it you would be mucking it out....

Have you looked at these, Rivergirl? We were considering one when we were looking at moving somewhere with an unreliable spring, last year:

resistance is fertile

We have used the envirolets, but they are quite heavy on the electric and you need the overflow kit if you want to avoid disaster!!!

We have also used the separett villa, which of the lot is so simple and good to use. Composting away from the loo is beeter in my book. We also have the great urine tank with biult in hose thingy!! all highly recommended.

Generally now we specify urine diverting pans with an aquatron for the convienience of flushing loos but with the benefits of some solids and urine for remote composting purposes.
