Connecting a PC and a notebookMy PC won't boot up. I don't know whether it's a problem with the motherboard, hard disk or windows installation. So, how easy is it to connect the hard drive in the PC to my notebook so I can get at the data?

But, honestly, do you really need it?

Yep. I need the data. There's an interesting word document that I saved which explains all the benefits that having a GPS would give me.

You can open up the laptop, extract the HD and then either get a 2.5"-3.5" IDE adaptor to mount it internally in your PC or a USB case for it

It's t'other way round. The notebook is fine.. it's the desktop PC that's poorly so I'm trying to get to the data on the PC hard disk.

Then you need an external USB case for your PC hard drive

or dowload a linux live CD-Rom which you can boot from to try to rescue the file:
like this one http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso
when you say won't boot, do you get anything at all when you turn it on? Any beeps or on screen messages? Can you hear a disk tuning inside or see any lights flashing.

Warning - one problem that causes boot failure is hard drive failure. So your PC might be OK but the drive might not.
