County Court Sheriff - SCAM !!

Wasn't sure where to post this, so MODS please move if you feel appropriate.

Had the most awful 20 mins this morning with some A***H*** pertaining to be a CC Sheriff and was just issuing a writ to come to The Hideaway to collect unpaid advertising monies of over two grand Shocked Shocked Shocked I passed the call over to OH who gave him a bit of a run for his money but did have concerns that we'd missed something. Anyway, end result was when Derek pushed him for more information on names and a contact number, he hung up. The number was WITHELD needless to say. We did some rapid Googling and turns out it is a scam but oh, so convincing and for anyone elderly (don't you DARE suggest we are such Laughing ) would have been a real frightener. So, anyone on here with holiday properties - be cautious and aware of these people.

Back to my Coffee now - 6th cup I think Rolling Eyes

I think these gits are so shameless in their attempts that you wouldnt need to be elderly to fall for it. And even if one person in 10 falls for it, this is worth their while. Mad

.....lay off the coffee though or you'll be buzzing all day.

Report it to the police.

We had this just over 2 years ago, with the senario that we had come up for a renewal, and we owed hundreds. I couldn't recall ever taking an advert, but what they do is put one on the "site" so when you are quickly looking it up your ad is there, and you think you need to renew.

I was put through to the fraud squad, and given a number.

Everytime someone rang to collect payment I jsut asked for name etc, to tell the fraud squad. Obviously they didn't do it.

It has taken 2 years to not get any phone calls. At one stace I was getting about 20 a week.

We did wonder about reporting it to the police but then also wondered about Trading Standards, but as you've done it, we'll do the same thing. He sounded so bl**dy convincing too although the first thing I said to him was, "how do I know you're genuine - you could be a scammer" to which he replied " I assure you I am not madam, I'm a County Court Sherrif and my number is............" ! Wish I'd written it down, but at the time I was out in the lambing shed with other things on my mind Cool .

I am pretty sure that people seeking payment for that sort of thing contact you by letter in the first instance. If it happens again, I'd say that you are out without your cards and please could you have a name and number to ring them back.
Nick

Always, always, always tell them to contact you in writing. Ignore phone calls.

I'd just hang up. The only time I would reply is if it was my credit card company. They would be careful to prove who they were as well.

He kept saying that letters had been sent including a "Red Letter".....I thought that was some sort of special treat Laughing ......

Despite him keeping the scam and the dialogue going for about 20 mins, he eventually just cut himself off. I think Derek was so persistent in his questioning of HIM and the 'MD' of this so called company we apparently owed money too, he eventually gave up. Derek kept referring to him as Mr Sherrif Laughing and told him he'd see him in court Shocked .
