Cream legbar eggsor more precisely their yolks. I have two cream legbars, this is their first year of laying, whose yolks are very pale. In the run with them, 42ft x 30ft, are 3 Light Sussex and 2 Dorking. All the other hens eggs yolks are a lovely dark colour. Is there any reason why the Legbars are so pale. Is it their breed, age, health ? It makes no difference to us, the birds appear perfectly healthy and both are laying daily it's just when I sell them I wonder if the customers have come to expect the dark yellow yolks and it would be nice to be able to explain why?

how does the size compare? my CLB lays eggs with larger yolks than the others.. (not that she is laying now - she is looking decidedly like soup material...)

just thinking - that if they have larger yolks.. maybe that would change the colour.. or something.. less yellow to go around.. ok it sounds lame now i have actually typed it....

I thought colour of yolks was to do with what they eat not the breed. Or is that just the taste??

I think it is mostly down to diet. I've been trying to google for information and I think if I understand correctly it can also be down to genetics with a birds ability to convert certain foods.
As all the birds run together and feed together, all look well and are wormed, I just wondered if there was another reason for them being pale.
I also read stress can effect the food conversion/intake and as these are bottom of the pecking order, if there was anything in that. Especially as since I introduced 3 new POL and the Legbars have moved up the pecking line the egg yolks are now getting darker.....I don't know think I have too much time on my hands and look for things that aren't there

I've got LS and Marans of the same age running together and the yolks from the LS are much darker in colour, so breed does play a part. Whether its as simple as LS's simply having more of a liking for eating grass and the colour it gives, I don't know.

I noticed that our cream legbars have lighter coloured yolks too, so I'd concur that the breed has to have something to do with it.
As far as I know they all eat the same stuff, though I aint about to follow them around to check

My silkies first eggs were disapoiningly pale, despite their being on fresh grass, but they have got darker, so maybe age has something to do with it as well.
