Credit cardsMore credit card thoughts please.
For those that take them.
Which company do you use?
Do you get good service / value?
What kind of terminal do you have?
Are you part of a buying group to get your account?
Yes we are thinking about it (again) and I am trying to colate all information.

I think a lot of people on here take PayPal. Is that an option for you?

It could be, but I am trying to see about cc too, so I compare all the companies, and know what different companies are like to deal with

I think there was a discussion on this in HMM

We use Lloyds where our bank account is, can't remember the figures off the top of my head, but what I did do when we opened the shop was play one off against the other with charges and fees. If you haggle you can get significant discount on the initial fees and on the price per transaction.
They supply the terminal as part of the package - about £60 a quarter with the VAT, but that does mean they'll supply a new one as technology develops, and will replace it if it's faulty. There's also a technical help line if things go wrong.
It's hassle free for us, which is what we need, as we do a lot of transactions.
If you want I'll dig out our statements and see exactly how much we pay per transaction, so you have something to compare with?

Right then...
Blimey, haven't looked at this in a while - the text is tiny
Per transaction charge of 3p, plus....
Debit cards at 35.4p
Credit cards various depending on type from 1.8% per transaction to 2.3% per transaction
As I said the machine hire is £61.34 per quarter including vat. Fees above are not vatable.
We were given these prices based on our projected annual turnover, although we perhaps should re-negotiate as it's almost doubled from the original figure.
They also wanted around £175 connection/set up fee. I think I managed to get this waived in the end.
Hope that helps, it's certainly helped me to have another look at it. If I get time, I may start another round of negotiations

Still working through this now.
So far, with a membership to the south west tourism (compromising my feelings about them, but I have been out voted) barclays are the cheapest for us, over a three year period.
Still waiting for lloyds to get back to me.

Streamline provide mine, charges similar to Penny but I bought the terminal. Members of the guild of fine food retailers get a discount.

I used to have streamline - but it was getting increasingly expensive, and no way of doing online stuff without opening a second account with them
We're now with Paypal, and use the virtual terminal system to take cards via telephone and the other side of it for online via romancart. Its all online and costs £20 a month plus the usual paypal fees if the money comes in that way. If I'm doing a show I usually take the laptop and a dongle, or once rented a terminal for chipandpin for the week (but won't be doing that again, as it ended up with us having to do a lot of manual entry anyway, so having the customer complete an order form and then processing as normal was actually taking less time )
So far we're happy with it, it doesn't go down at odd times or for long periods (have friends on HSBC and they are having no end of problems atm) and you can cost centre it so easy to do the stats from at the end of the day/week/month/quarter/year.

We are with streamline (as a physio I get a 'special offer' but I haven't got the figures in front of me). I know that the rental is £14.99 a month. We were able to upgrade to do remote sales (internet and phone) using the same terminal and line.
