Curse the weather...

A totally soggy summer followed by a dry and windy autumn - not good. Thought I would head out to my favourite sweet chestnut spots today after yesterdays heavy winds to see what the state of play was... I am bitterly disappointed.

The winds have brought lots of them down far too early, they are tiny and under ripe. There are some still left on the trees but unless we get some rain soon they will not fill out either - they look just as tiny on the trees.

The annual sweet chestnut forage is my favourite part of the year and it looks like the weather is going to produce yet another poor year for them. *sigh*

Everyone should get plenty of rain this week. Might be too late - we shall see.

Its raining here, not bucketloads but a fairly constant drizzle.

After moaning about no rain, I am already half convinced that I dont like this wet and dreary weather and will be looking forward to next years summer. What a day that'll be!

Lovely bright day today. Cold overnight but nice a warm now

Vegplot, how was your trip on the Thames? Which bits did you cruise through?

The Met Office have a weather warning for the south:

"Outbreaks of heavy rain will spread across parts of southern England this afternoon and evening. The rain gradually easing from the west this evening. Rainfall totals may exceed 15 mm in three hours with 25 to 40 mm in some places through the period. The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the Highways Agency for further advice on traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads.
Issued at: 1042 Wed 7 Oct"

Autumn has arrived!

Finally had some rain here. If we get a deluge then towards the end of the month we should be buried in shrooms.

Had my fourth nil return from Thetford Forest this morning, ground is moist but only saw a total of three species.

No such problems here.

While walking the dog this morning I found:

Honey Fungus - masses of it in huge clusters. Never seen so much!
Oyster Mushrooms
Orange Oak Boletes
Orange Birch Boletes
Brown Birch Boletes
Bay Boletes
Slipper Jacks
Ceps
Hedgehog Fungus
Green Cracking Russulas
Chnaterelles
Winter Chanterelles
BeefSteak Fungus - some huge
Chicken of the Woods

The COTW was actually in the garden of my new house! Make the most of the wet spell. Next week we have an Indian summer forecast with temperatures up into the 20degC.

Oh.. also got some great sweat chestnuts Smile

Think we've got some Horse Mushrooms in the paddock, but I'm not certain and I'm too cowardly to try them.

We still have winter chantarelles, hedgehogs and a few chantarelles. All are sodden and drowned. Frost has started a month early. They have promised us a few days without rain, but it may be too cold for new growth.

Ten weeks of water with very few days in between.

What happened to the autumn? Crying or Very sad
