cutting garden with a spiritual edgeOne of my projects for the winter is to design a cutting garden up on a square of the allotment. I've been inspired by Sarah Raven's The Cutting Garden book and as I have the space thought it would make a lovely centre piece for the plot.As there are such lovely views and it is such a peaceful spot I'd like to add a spiritual edge to this area, a place to sit and be... and admire the calming view. I've got Gardens for the Soul by Pamela Woods but wondered if anyone can suggest any other books on a similar theme. I know roughly the shape of my design, its more planting ideas; symbolism in the plants and features on a Celtic/ elements and compass points is my idea at the moment. Bearing in mind it is a cutting garden so I want to harvest things for the house. It isn't meant to take the place of my garden at home, ( no patio) just be an extra dimension to the plot. |

Is it just purely for flowers, or would you be looking for sensory stimulation, and apocathery. |

purely flowers, as I've a herb area already created. Its just such a beautiful spot, it would be nice to sit awhile amongst pretty flowers ( that I can harvest for the house) and think and meditate on all thats around me. I don't want to alarm the neighbours but just thought some discreet symbolism would help the mood and focus my meditations. |

There's a book recommended in the Saturday Telegraph, Fiddlesticks, you might want to look at. The Charmed Garden by Diane Morgan, "an entertaining and informative compendium of ancient plant lore and myth".

ooh thanx Bugs - I have the sat telegraph - how come I didn't see that!  - will have to have a delve in the recycling bin me thinks!
Have also picked up Gardening with the Goddess from the greenshop www.greenshop.co.uk which we visited the other weekend and that is also fascinating. |
