dahlia from seed?

I have a few nice "species" dahlias with simple (single?) flowers. I now have lots of seeds. I'm thinking of growing more plants from these seeds. I appreciate that they may have cross polinated, but thats OK...I'm not looking for "the same plant as...", I'm looking for different flowers.

So is it worth it? and how would I do it?

I used to sow dahlias in spring, in a heated propagator, same as HHAs. Prick out into 3" pots, frost free greenhouse, then into the open garden after the last frost. They would flower and form a massive tuber in their first season. I rarely saved the tubers, just grew them from seed every year like annuals. Good germination rate. That was in the midlands.

Bedding dahlias are raised from seed so no reason why not.
In a heated propogator early in the spring.

Quote:
Annual, takes 7-14 days to germinate at 20°C - cover seeds with vermiculite. Prick out after 3 weeks into 6-packs or pots, grow on at 15°C. Sowing to flowering around 12 weeks

Could be fun: you don't know what you'll get! Could be any colour, and some dahlias have lovely leaf colour too.
