Dare I?

be rebellious re shed design on the allotment...?

Our new allotment site (which has been up and running since march) has a very strict specification about the sheds allowed. Basically they specify a 6X4 bog standard apex - and even specify the shade of brown... and the position on the allotment plot. Can't say i'm very inspired by the idea of such a hut and am rather tempted to get something slightly different... i.e. something with a double door in the long side that will open up a bit more shoudl i want it, but is it worth it..?!! I guess the worse that can happen is that they demand i take it down..!

In view of the emails that have been flying around from certain members of the committee aimed at enforcing the "keep your plot tidy and weed free" clause in the tenancy I suspect that any departure from the specified may draw a bit of a response... I've never really been the rebellious type...

Is now the time to start... Question

meet the spec then personalise it might be good politics
once folk settle in practical overturns rules
weeds are salad too

Those pompous, small brained fascist leftovers from a previous era get on by thingies too! However, the best strategy is as dpack suggests. The next stage is to get on the committee. Politically correct suggestions include: recycling, the dangers of toxic substances, publicity for environmental issues, preserving bumblebees, reminding plot-holders about endangered species - (can't weed that bit -bumblebee nest - could get a massive fine, not sure but the committee could be liable....).

Welcome to the fifth column!

I've been looking at the old wooden shed on the plot and considering gathering materials to build a new one. I'm struggling to persuade myself that a Tardis design is a bad idea.

But sheds are always too big outside and too small inside...

It sounds as if your allotment committee has watched the recent film 'The Allotment' too many times. Very Happy Lovely film but very taken up with correct shed colour.....

The site i've been on for the last 1 1/2 years had a 6' x 4' shed rule, this was a reaction to a plotholder who virtually lived on site in order to avoid the police. The reasoning was that future sheds would be too small to camp in. Formentioned plotholder in now "inside", lots of people complained and the shed rule has been relaxed to 8' x 6'.

If wizz really wanted to stir it up, he could ask the borough council if they endorse these rules and what legal advice they have had on the matter. I would take a guess that they are unenforceable. So every month you write to the council asking under the freedom of information act how many plotholders have been evicted and for what reason. As I understand it, you can't be evicted if you've got crops growing.

If her committee is anything like the committee on my previous plot in York, they rule with an iron fist. I needed planning permission to put up a shed or a greenhouse. All structures had to be bought (they couldn't be made), to ensure that they were safe. I think it was more likely that they wanted them to look nice and twee, but they were using safety as a smoke-screen.

Maybe Oldish Chris is right...maybe Wizz could challenge. But it'd cause a lot of bad feeling, just for a shed.
I got so p*ssed off with the narrow minded, blinkered attitude of the comittee that I gave up my plot & looked for another. Its not worth fighting entrenched attitudes. There are still empty plots on that site.

to be fair, i think it's as much about planning as anything... I think that the planning types at the council have specified that the allotment society specify the shed size, shape and colour - i guess it's just the way that the rule enforcement seems to be going that makes me hesitate...

think i'm going to have to go with dpacks comment... question now is can i get a delivery of an online purchased shed to an allotment site without a postcode??? ...suspect i'll have to borrow the one of the nearest house!

Dpack generally makes a lot of sense.
