DEFRA cost sharing

http://www.farmersguardian.com/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=20628

any thoughts?

Yeh I have a few, most not fit for a public site.

Its going to be made up of existing gov bodies/departments so it will

a, come in over budget
b, fail to meet its own targets
c, fail to achive even the basics of what farmers will be paying for
d, be replaced / renamed in a few years after a fiasco
e, posibly CAUSE an outbreak or two

How with falling sales prices & rising costs they think that farmers can afford to pay this I have no idea. farmers cant stay competitive as it is with cheap imports.

Perhaps we should put them in a letter & send it to Gordon Brown and that eejit who preceded him.

Fine by me, as long as there is an opt-out choice. I doubt there'll be many farmers voting labour at the next election, they seem to have been on a mission to destroy farming from the start. What else can you expect from the Department for the Eradication of Farmers & Rural Activities. Rolling Eyes

They've piled on the costs of BSE, FMD, Avian Influenza, TB & now Bluetongue- British farmers don't fear these diseases, they fear what the government will think up next in the name of 'biosecurity'. Anyone got a gun I can borrow?

I think we need a proper campaign this time - car stickers, A4 posters you can print out and put up in your window, email it to all your friends.

SAY NO TO HEADAGE PAYMENTS IF YOU LIKE BRITISH FOOD

...or something

the rift between smallholders and commercial farmers needs to be forgotten about because we're both affected by this - the rivalry there is great from DEFRA's POV because divided we fall as the old saying goes. we need to work together.

I wonder if the countryside alliance would get behind it? I dont necesarily support them, but needs must.

I hope the NFU come up with something good Confused

anyone know if there are any updates on this? what the NFU's official line is?

In return, the department will propose setting up a brand new body, possibly with full independence from the Government, to give the industry a greater say over animal health policy.

If I'm paying for it I want total say for my holding, not some generic vote that covers a county. I don't mind complying with DEFRA tests & monitoring, they pay the vet but don't give me anything for my time or the equipment [and TB tests for pre-movement cattle] needed to respond to their ideas, to me that is cost sharing.

Only looks to be covering England though scratch Yorkshire needs to be independant Wink
