Not to say that shipping cargo isn't a problem, but it's still a lot more efficient per pound of material transported, compared to air freight, right?

Ineed. We ship far, far more than the we air freight hence why we produce more CO2 by shipping.

I'm just saying that when give the two options, it's better to ship something that to air freight it.... lesser of two evils while still evil, is still lesser!

Wouldn't it be a good idea to keep the old chestnuts in the same thread?
http://forum.downsizer.net/viewtopic.php?p=431803 for example...

I had yet to re-discover downsizer at that point... (we need a more sheepish looking smiley face)
We could turn this into a discussion about how daft it is that most of the goods in America are shipped by tractor trailer and not rail, no matter how long the distance when obviously it just makes sense to freight things on rail the long distance and supply from hubs by truck.... (then again, probably no one disagrees with this...)

Going back to the days of my mis-spent youth, given that the good old Manxman (Manxperson) could knock back the boiler oil at over three tons an hour at full blast the figures dont really suprise me.
