Dog killed my chickenA week or so ago I was here worrying about how may cats would react to the chickens, but last night it was one of the bloody dogs who had one.
Earlier in the day we'd been saying how happy he was with them, sitting in the garden guarding them like they were part of his harem.
But last night he went to sniff one of the big ones who was sitting down, totally non threatening. Anyway she jumped up and flapped her wings at him and next thing I know he's leapt off into the long grass and killed one of the little ones.
I don't know if the dog saw the wing flapping as aggression and wanted to reassert his authority, or whether he just saw the little chicken in the long grass and went into hunt mode before he realised what he had in his mouth. Either way, I'm well pi$$ed off as that's now TWO chicken killers I own who can't be allowed loose any more. And, sods law, it was my son's favourite chicken

A couple of days ago the other dog broke off her chain and went after one too. Managed to get it by the wing, but thankfully I was close by and clobbered her before she did more than give the poor chicken a bald patch.
What the hell do you do with a couple of dogs like that? They're on leads all the time now, which is no fun for anyone as they just howl like a pair of banshees. It doesn't help that we're currently in a rented house where they aren't allowed in the house and we can't build a run.

Loose the chickens or the dogs. Hard but true.

It sounds a bit like the dogs either think they are the alphas in your family or they just haven't had it explained clearly enough that the chickens are off limits.
The dogs just need educating.
You've got to demonstrate to them that you are the only one in the pack that is allowed to touch the chickens (or rather the humans in your pack are the only ones)
Of course its easy to sit here and say it...
Hope it works out.

Agree 100% with that - otherwise you won't be able to trust the dogs when your back is turned. I have made it very clear to our Springer (who I love to bits) that he has to be very gentle around the hens or he is banished to his bed for the day!
