domestic steam cleaners

Having just spent a whole day cleaning the inside and of the windows and washing down the frames and windowsills I am toying with the idea of getting a steam cleaner.

Not the hand held things that look like penguins, rather the type that looks like a small cylinder vacuum cleaner.

I like the idea of being able to clean stuff without using any chemicals, but is that particular environmental gain offset by using electricity to clean with?

I don't know how much electricity they use Question I don't even know if they are any good Question They are supposed to be good for glass, tiles, floors etc. We have a lot of tiles. Anyone got one and if so what do you think of it Question I'm not overly fond of gadgets for gadgets' sake. It would have to be worthwhile.

We had one for cleaning furniture and mattresses - very useful. but then the white goods department nabbed it coz they found out it is absolutely brilliant for cleaning out fridges and cookers. over the years we've worn out two, so i'd say they are useful. not sure about cleaning windows though - i'd be worried about breaking them. the steam is very hot - we always wear rubber safety gloves.
