Don't be too tidy...I've clipped off the dead stems from the plants over the last weekend and I'm never that tidy so there's plent of dead twigs, leaves and stems covering the lawn at the moment. This has been welcomed by the local bird population as I've seen several strolling over the lawn with beaks full of bits for their nests. So, if you can, don't be too tidy as it leaves plenty of things for the wild life to use.

Some may find it very hard to not be tidy, others it just comes naturally.

It's also fun to watch the birds gathering nesting material. Just watched a starling pick up a bit of stem that must have been too short, it then went on to try a piece that was still attached and after a while tugging at the stem it gave up, checked a few more bits and then came upon a perfect long unattached stem and flew off with it.

last year's cattail spikes are gradually becoming bald... hopefully some birdies round here have a nice soft nest as a result...

One thing which intrigues me is the number of dead leaves still on trees at the moment and how that will work with the new leaves growing!

I think the new buds coming through push the old ones off.

TD did some shredding last weekend and last year's artichoke heads got broken up as a result, I thought the furry bits in the middle looked like ideal nesting material. I think starlings are really funny to watch, they're so shifty looking

I usually put my dog hair out in the garden for the birds to line their nests with!

I try and keep a relativly tidy garden but it obviously doesn't work as my neighbours called the enviromental health team at my local council and reported me for having an overgrown and untidy garden that was presenting her family with a health risk, Wouldnt really mind but the garden is compleatly paved over as we havent got round to opening up the beds yet and everything i had growing was an edible and in a pot or container. The EHO officers came round and had a look and suggested i sweep the garden as the complaint was mainly the dust was affecting "someones asthma" so i gave it a sweep and a quick hose down and that was that, so the morale is let it get a little untidy but dont let it get dusty OK
P.S. cant wait till i get a couple of chickens and see what they make of that
