Don't overload your trailer

A few weeks ago I collected some wood from a supplier who filled up the trailer to the top. In retrospect I should have off loaded some as visually it looked over burdened although there was no way to check the weight of the load.

It's a 7' x 4' box with deep sides but the axle is only rated to 500kg but I decided to take it easy and drive back to where we keep our wood shed. The tyres looked a little strained but we got there in the end.

However, a few days later when towing the trailer empty one of the tyres deflated. I replaced the wheel with a new as a spare the other day and though that was the end of the incident. Today, while towing back a half load I noticed the other wheel was smoking so pulled over and the hub was bubbling molten grease and very hot. It was obvious that it was going to need replacing and had probably been damaged by overloading the axle. I got it back and removed the wheel to find that it wasn't far off from detaching from the axle and that wouldn't have been pleasant.

The lesson has been learned, it has cost me a new wheel and possibly a new hub. It could have been worse.

Assuming 7x4x2 you had about 1.6m3 of loose tipped firewood or around 1m3 of solid.

If dry soft wood about 250-300kg
If dry hard wood about 300-400kg
If wet soft wood about 5-700kg
If wet hard wood about 6-900kg

Good job it dint go when the trailer was full.

I got round to doing my trailer bearings the other month. The one that was loose when I came to yours was not the one making all the noise. That one just needed a clean up & re grease the other side was shot.

It was probably closer to the high figure than I care to admit.

Now I need to find out what hub it is and where to get the bearings.

Bearings will be easy. They will have the part number stamped on the rim. Failing that a bearing shop will measure them.

If it needs a new hub then it will come with bearings. You just need to measure the shaft to get the right ones.

That's a really useful table!
Thanks.

Glad you are ok Vegplot.

There a second lesson to be learned. If stress damage occurs then it's not always confined to just one area.

Don't over tighten your wheel bolts as well, we did on our caravan and lost the wheel on the main road through Grantham after travelling 65 miles. Apparently it looks like we stripped thread off two of the bolts and this is sufficient to wobble the other two bolts off and the whole wheel came off wrecking the hub and caravan floor. we were pulling around 1000 kgs at the time.

My experience with motorbikes and vans is that when you replace one item, other components directly linked (or sometimes not) tend to fail shortly afterwards.
Eg replace a suspension bush or bearing and another fails shortly after. My theory is that the 2nd item to fail has previously bedded in and changing the 1st bearing minutely changes the way the 2nd bearing is seated or the way the stresses go through it, consequently finishing it off.

I wouldn't be suprised if your other wheel bearing packs up soon.
a. because it is probably similar age and condition and ..
b. applying my theory - fixing the 1st bearing so it now runs smoothly will affect the stresses / forces going through the opposite wheel (which has allready bedded into running with the old bearing opposite), consequently causing its demise. If that makes sense.

I might be talking rubbish with my theory- but this is my experience of such mechanical matters.
vegplot

No not rubbish, quite sound in fact. I plan to change bearings on both axles as I know the other has been subjected to similar stresses and will fail sooner rather than later.
