the enzymes from bile disolve the fats in the skin cauing a "self oiling" softening iirc

Is there more bile in dog poo? There are few things less pleasant to handle, and plenty of more available poos that are more pleasant. jamanda

Bile is mostly inorganic salts, it aids the workings of enzymes in the duodenum by raising the pH, but doesn't contain enzymes. Pilsbury

There are more pleasant poos available but in the time this was done there were thousands of dogs roaming the towns and collection the poo and selling It to tanners was an occupation the lowest class of people could and did do.

I guess. But I'm surprised there wouldn't be more cattle or horse poo about, given that the skins would come from the slaughterman, who would have had nervous cattle just up the line a bit.

Is it realistic, or better TV? Genuinely don't know.

the salts from bile do fats sounds more like it Pilsbury

I think the horse poo may well of been burnt and a lot of skins were taken to tanners after slaughter else where, tanning was a specialised job, slaughter not so much. Treacodactyl

I would guess carnivore faeces would be best as the animal needs to break down skin, bone etc as part of their digestion. Dog would seem ideal at the time but I guess lion or cat might work well, human possibly but herbivores not.

You could always do an experiment. Shocked

Maybe that was needed to go on the fields. Maybe dog muck wasn't used as manure as it's more likely to carry transmitable illnesses?

Horses don't have bile ducts Wink jamanda

They still make bile though. It just has a different route to the duodenum. Like people who have had their gall bladder removed.
