Donald TrumpI said I'd post this on behalf of a friend. I have signed it. I thought a few of you might have opinions on it too.
Dear all,
If any of you feel strongly about Donald Trump and the Scottish Government's proposals to run a coach and horses through the legislation to protect our best wildlife sites (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) through building a golf course on half of Menie Links north of Aberdeen, then please register your concerns on the Downing Street website (see link below), write to your MPs/ MSPs etc.

Both petitions will carry the weight of a trump in a thunderstorm anyway.

You're probably right, but I voted anyway. At least that way, when it happens I know I did something to oppose it.

I see no huge reason not to let them build a grassy golf course on the site if they really think that the chosen, wind battered, freezing coast would be attractive to millionaires, but by there own admission it will not be viable if they don't get to build the 1500 houses and hotel that is to go with it. I would like to see even Trump build the same golfing complex in Yellowstone National Park or some other protected nature reserve in the U.S.
Anyway Scotland already has the most famous links course in the world with ancient infrastructure at St. Andrews. Why would we want to detract from that?
Aberdeenshire Council voted against it, so that should be an end to the matter, without Holyrood intervening.
If Scotland really wanted to make a money generating tourist attraction, it should convert one of our warmer western islands e.g. Coll with low rainfall and long hours of summer sunshine into a type of golfing island resort. Tax free shopping like Jersey would make it a dead cert winner.

Maybe when they design it they can do something about those pesky thermals so that chopper flights over the area lose some of their white-knuckle quality?

Sadly that seems to be standard planning practice these days. Local councils refuse permission and then central government grant it.

This application has been "called in" (the technical jargon) for consideration at Scottish (national) level.
AND -
- the Aberdeen council has sacked the 'casting vote' chairman of their planning committee
AND -
- taken back from the planning committee the council's 'final say' on large scale planning matters, which must now be approved by the whole council...
Seems there's some business to be done, and dollars 'for the local economy'...
