Downsizer food weekend 2009

After the success of the skillshare weekend we are knocking about the idea of a big food weekend for next year. Possibly around easter time.

The theme would be around a series of workshops/demonstrations centered around subjects such as, bread making, cake baking, butchery, fish & shellfish, wine tasting and appreciation, game, christmas puddings, medieval food, curing, indian snacks etc. These are just some of the ideas we have been knocking around.

It would be a chargeable event due to the costs involved, and we would be looking to arrange somewhere with accomodation/camping at a separate cost. We don't have an idea of a cost yet but we obviously do our best to keep it down.

Right now, we'd like to get a rough idea of the people who would in principle be interested, as this helps us understand overall costs, size of venue, insurance etc. We would also love to hear what you'd like to see at such an event, and what things you would love to learn.

Finally, we're interested in hearing from food & drink related traders on here as we see this as an opportunity for you to show off your delicious products. If you are a trader who's interested then please send me a pm.

Thanks everyone!
Chez

We'd definitely be interested. Particularly in learning about meat-processing-type things. And mediaeval food. And wine Smile.

Yeah, we'd be interested. Well, I would, HT just grunted in my general direction when I asked him, but he's in that kind of mood (and occupied with something on the laptop).

Now - go and start your own beer and vaseline threads and leave Jonnyboy's gourmet food weekend thread in peace.

I would possibly be interested from a personal rather than professional point of view. If I was being selfish I would say that I couldn't come if it was over Easter. If I was being generous I would say please don't make the poor Downsizers camp over Easter, it's bloody freezing. Make it September instead.
Jamanda

We already have the fibre skills event this September.
The proposed venue has a camping barn and a B & B, so it won't be subarctic conditions.
twoscoops

I just have memories of trudging through the slush in Oxford last Easter Monday. Wouldn't growers also have a glut come September? Somewhere coastal would be nice, we could rip-off the River Cottage brand and have our own catch & cook!
jocorless

Plus its likely to be the latter part of the Easter break not the main part, as any venue we use is likely to be busy during Easter weekend itself and probably not able to cope with 70+ Downsizers - which is what we had at the Skill sharing weekend
Brownbear

I'd be happy to furnish some wild meat for demonstrations.

I thought your rutting days were over?
dpack

i up for ,cooking or eating
tasty terrestial invertibrates ?
ten minutes at low tide = dinner ?
cooking without a kitchen ?
the great roast potato challenge ? Laughing
preserving meat or fish ?
2steps

could be interested depending on where it was Smile
twoscoops

The photos from the skillshare weekend looked great. I would love to do anything involving cooking outdoors, pig roast, barbecue, wood-oven, poikie, you name it.

I might allow myself a sip of wine if I must and living in Oxfordshire, anything to do with seafood would be marvellous. Also, someone can teach me how to poach an egg, as I've never been able to.

Somewhere near the coast is a good idea. I'd like to know how/what to eat seafood wise even though I'm not keen on it.
wildfoodie

dunno if I'd be preaching mainly to the converted, but would love to offer some wild food cookery learning.... or some foraging skills? or both??
it would also depend on the dates.
tahir

I'm crap at foraging and should be there, so would be interested

If foraging is The Thing, maybe Eastertime is not such a good idea? August/September would give just about everything: mushrooms, berries, seafood, strange forrest plants, wild spices and whatever GB can produce at its most bountiful.

Foraging is a thing, not the thing - and there are plenty of greens to forage in spring any way. We already have an event in Autumn. If this is successful, we will probably do other ones at other times of year in the future.
wildfoodie

March /April /May is a great time for foraging - loads around. this year I bought hardly any green veg. some spring shrooms usually to be found
too.
August and September is also good but bad timing for me personally Razz

Me too, wild greens would be great.

Sounds like a foraging weekend.

Yes please, foraging skills would be brilliant, it would be nice to be confident to eat more unusual stuff without the fear of an impromtu visit to the Doc's or A & E.

I'm confident with wild fruit and berries but not leaves and mushrooms - inkcaps are about as adventurous as I get and I know I'm missing out on some amazing things.

That will be one part of it by the sounds of things, but there are plenty of other irons in the fire.
gil

The totality of this is shaping up nicely.
I'd like seashore foraging / catching dinner, please (dpack, wildfoodie)

Also preserving meat/ fish in a smoking or other stylee. (not just bunging it in the freezer Embarassed )

Would it be an idea to invite people to our end of the country for a late summer/autumn foraging event? We've got at least three active foragers in Cambridgeshire, all on this forum, and some good haunts for teaching the basics.

This is all taking off rather nicely.

gnasher

I think we could well be interested - subject to location etc - but we are veggie so a lot of the meaty things would not be of interest to us. Sad
Cathryn

There will be plenty of veggie as well. Lots of variety.
sarahloo

I'd be interested. Would love to meet other Downsizers : )

I'm interested in taking up fishing. I've no idea where to start. All the websites I can find (even the links from Downsizer) seem like gobbledygook to me - need practical demonstration/instruction!!

Also interested in foraging, and, if it was available, basket making and stuff like that. Can we get Ray Mears to come? : )

Seen the size ogf him? We'd need an extra pig on the spit roast
Chez

Ray Mears scares me. I have a sneaking suspicion that if it was just you and him out in the wilderness with nothing else to eat, one wouldn't last very long ...
Earthmother

What area is it going to be in please?
Barefoot Andrew

We'll be announcing more details shortly!

It's in Devon EM. The details are all in this thread.

http://forum.downsizer.net/viewtopic.php?t=34715&start=0

Can people please PM me (and Alison about accommodation if required) if they are intending to come so we we have some idea of numbers?

Jonnyboy - would you mind if I locked this thread and left a link to the other at the bottom?
