Downsizers play early music ?

Following on from the 'playing an instrument' thread, it looks as though some of us are into early and baroque music.

I was always very taken with the idea of people sitting round a table playing recorder music of an evening. Sociable and fun; make your own entertainment.

What versions / tunes float your boat ?
What have you played in a group, if anything ?
What would you like to play with others?
What have you listened to that you liked the sound of / thought behind ?

I would really like to play La Bataille again, with as large a group as we could muster. Including percussion
Am no purist regarding instruments.

My tutor in college used to play early music - Mediaeval I think. I loved the sound. I used to play recorder and would really like to get back in to it again.

Anything from Playford is fun with recorders.

I like it but the only thing I can play is the grampohone. This morning's drive-in was accompanied by Dowland and Haydn.

On the gramaphone? How do you stop the needle jumping?

I'm a very careful driver, and keep to Spanish speed limits. The only problem is steering while I'm winding it up.

There is a fantastic little- tiny pub at cwm dee, I’ve no idea where it is, I just know I go there once a month and bash the daylights out of my bodrhan (there’s a ' symbol in there somewhere). Folky stuff, best in large groups! Very Happy nothing like it.
If I couldn’t be up a mountain, I would spend my last moments on earth playing along to a lively reel with ten or so other musicians. yeh.

Various possibilities suggested :
Drive HQ - shared resource for pics / music
mp3 files
.wav file off own recording using windows media player - may convert to mp3 file
adobe Audition - trial version for download ?

A contributor to The Recorder Magazine once briefly mentioned "online communities" for recorder players in a review of an early music summer school in the Czech Republic. I don't have the article to hand, but here's a letter I wrote to the editor:

I'm writing in response to Netty Rhodes's review of 'Letni skola stare hudby' (apologies for lack of diacritical marks). She wrote:

"... in order to derive greatest benefit of ensemble coaching I would suggest as much pre-course preparation as possible. One option is to persuade your playing friends or your chamber ensemble to come with you to Prachatice...."

Hmm. That sounds dangerously similar to the Dartington Summer School, or at least what I've heard of it. That is, unless you come along with a pre-formed ensemble and a stack of music and/or are part of the "in" crowd you don't stand a chance of playing in informal ensembles. However Netty offers a glimmer of hope for Prachatice participants as she goes on to say:

"... but if this proves impractical then you may well come across members of online communities who are also planning to attend and who may be willing to send and receive music..."

Where are these online communities for recorder players? Please don't just tell me to go and google "recorder"; I would really appreciate personal recommendations.

In an ideal world my fellow members of the Devon SRP and its offshoot the Exeter Recorder Orchestra would be my first contacts for someone to discuss summer schools (or any other aspect of recorder playing). Unfortunately it hasn't worked out that way. The monthly meetings leave barely enough time for remembering each others' names, never mind detailed discussions (or at least that's been my experience, and I have Asperger's syndrome). Even worse, I am evidently the only longstanding member of this branch not to play in any smaller groups. I would like to, but there is no way in for me. What small groups that exist don't hold auditions as such; it's more about playing with friends or friends of friends. To this end the only "advice" I have received is to make myself known, invite people back to my flat to play ensembles and maybe this just might lead to greater things. It's totally impractical as I live in a cramped studio flat and have only a limited collection of consort music.

Feel free to pass on this message to Netty Rhodes.

I suppose this might be an example of the online communities to which Netty Rhodes refers. There's also the ABRSM...
