Good Idea.
Make sure it 'fresh' and kept in the dark.Put some cider vinegar in it.

I never put water in a large container for my chickens. In this way I change the water quite a few times per day to make sure they have some and in this way, the've always got fresh water.

We have (covered) water butts associated with two of the sheds, much handier than bringing water from the house.
I keep thinking about a diverter on the house roof downpipe, linking a series of water butts Bob Flowerdew style with syphons, but have a technical problem to deal with. (Lack of space by the downpipe. )
I had been thinking of putting gutters on the coops, but have changed my mind on account of the cost. Guttering, and especially the fittings are ridiculously expensive, and as you need the same fittings whether the gutter is a few feet or a whole length, you/I will get better returns on a bigger roof.

That's what i was thinking too
OH wants to make a bigger coop (as i have a habit of collecting chooks ) and i was thinking that we could fit a waterbutt on it ..the only thing that was worrying me is keeping the water fresh (at present i have 22 girls!)

We only have about a metre of guttering at the back of our chicken shed because we sloped the roof towards the middle and left a space where the gutter collects the water from both end roof panels.
We've got two 1000 litre tanks which do us for the chickens, washing the containers and a bit of plant watering too.

a lump of sulfur and a lightproof container will keep collected water fresh

colour it green

we have a water butt that is fed off the roof of the hen house. it is covered. As the butt has a tap, it is very easy to use, and we keep an old dustpan brush there for giving the water container a brush out.
