Drop traps

I know we discussed this yonks ago but has anyone got experience of setting up and using them?
bodger

To go to the trouble of installing a drop trap you would have to have hundreds if not thousands of rabbits. I'll find out what I can for you.

Sorry to be ignorant but what is a drop trap - i don't have thousands of rabbits but there are loads in the fields around here and they keep getting into the garden, which is annoying, but if they get into my veg patch I will be , well, even more annoyed Mad

I presume it's a large piece of wood on a piece of string with a trigger. Rabbit knocks trigger, wood falls from above and smack! no more rabbit.

I've got some sketches of them in some old survival books - if no one's answered by the time I get home next week I'll see if I can dig them out and scan them.

I would suggest that if you had thousands of rabbits, drop traps would not be the most efficient way of making a dent in the population.

I gather the modern drop trap is a live catch cage/box type trap where the rabbit enters and cannot escape. A bit like a lobster pot. You then have to take out your live rabbit and dispatch the critter.

Mmm, another one of those things that sounds like a good idea but you really need some seasoned old country bod to show you how to do it properly - I find there's lots of things like that there's a national shortage of Jo Grundies!

Right !

Imagine a large tub or bucket dug into the ground so that its rim is level with the surrounding ground.

The barrel has a lid that is fitted on a rod so that the lid flips. Rabbit stands on lid, lid rotates and the rabbit drops into the tub and then the lid returns to its original position waiting for the next rabbit to come along.

The tub is dug in on a well used rabbit route, either through a hole in a fence or a stone wall where the rabbits enter the field to feed.

Very productive but to make it worth while you need a lot of rabbits using that path.

Thanks bodger that's a really clear description now i know what a drop trap is even if I'm unlikely to be using one - the man in the local country shop gave me some noose type things which I'm supposed to put over the entry holes, but then if i knew where all the entry holes were I'd just repair the chicken wire anyway.
