Drying Hygrophorus Milky Cap?

Today was my first time finding Hygrophorus Milky mushrooms and Im wondering if anyone has experience with drying them?

Thanks!
cab

Not that one. But I've tried drying other milk caps, and while it works I wouldn't say that they maintain a good flavour. Pickling works better with other species.

thanks!

I guess it is the little white wax cap Hygrocybe niveus you are referring to. If so they do not dry well at all.

Milk caps are very, very different fungi but I can't say that they are great driers either.

definitely not a wax cap...... should be a 'lactarius hygrophoroides' (i dont have access to my photos to post a pic right now)

Never heard of this one before! Lactarius hygrophoroides appears to be a North American species and has never been recorded in the UK.

thanks mushroom man, very interesting.... have you ever tried drying other types of lactarius before then? are they always best eaten fresh?

they were just springing up like mad around here, so i thought there might be a way to make use of the excess....... i havent tried pickling like cab suggested, but that might be next.

Never dried Lactarius spp.. I fancy it wouldn't work well. I am worrying more about what you have found. Identify first - think about how to eat them later! Very Happy

Sorry if this sounds thick but you do know that bologna1767 lives in America don't you mushroom man?

Well - I was starting to wonder! - did I miss something in previous posts? Still don't fancy dried Milk Caps though.

If you look to the left of his posts, at the bottom, under his name, you see 'manhattan' under the location header. Easy to miss Laughing

Bologna1767, that puts you around the patch of 'Wildman' Steve Brill, doesn't it? New Yorks most (only?) famous forager.

yes, manhattan...... sorry about that! maybe i should just change the title of this thread to 'dried milk caps.... and why no one likes them' hehe.

id say steve brill is definitely the most famous forager around new york city, plus he has a helpful website. on cab's advice a while back i joined the local mushroom club as well.....

anyway, sorry if i confused things around here...... Embarassed next time ill check to see if the species ive found is only located in north america before i post.

oh, and in the interest of full disclosure, as we've already covered my location......
