Dwarf French Beans

Are seeds best planted in their final growing position or do they mind being grown on after starting in pots?

I know some things prefer not to be moved but not sure about DFB's.

I'm going to grow bush variety this year as climbing ones haven't cropped very well in recent years.

I start mine in pots. I do a dozen (sowed the seeds a few days ago) to grow in 10l pots in the greenhouse. Next month will be doing climbing beans, also starting them off in 3" square pots.

I start my dwarf beans in pots, then transfer them to bigger pots and keep them under cover (for me, in the polytunnel). I find they do much better under cover rather than outside.

And I agree, climbing beans don't seem to have done so well in the last few years. Is it a Welsh weather thing do you think?

It feels like the climbers take longer to get up to speed and the weather in this neck of the woods by late Sept/early Oct isn't warm enough for them, which is when they seem to have been just about to go into overdrive.

No undercover option, so I thought closer to the ground would give them a better chance.

In pots on a patio or against a warm wall?

I had good crops from my dfbs outside last year, but the cfb, cherokee trail of tears - was a bit sulky. However, some seed swap seed labelled as Polish Climbing Bean did extremely well, as did Majorcan pea bean both of which I'm growing this year. cherokee ToT I'll try in the polytunnel, but only if space for cucumbers and tomatoes allow - I have 3 cuc varieties this year Shocked earthyvirgo

Had good success with Toms in pots against the sunny side of the shed a couple of years ago, so might try in pots and some in the ground.

Possibly my fave veg.
Love them warm in a vinaigrette dressing

I grow them in toilet roll inners and then just plant those straight in the ground. earthyvirgo

I used to do that but stopped when I found they didn't de-compose as well as I'd have liked. I was a bit concerned about the roots not being able to spread as they wanted.

I used to sow my dwarf French beans direct. Crop was OK given how cold and wet it is here. dpack

i had a good crop from direct, a few times in poor soil in one place i planted into a hole full of decent compost

the ones i have grown were short but they needed wide to fully crop

full sun helps ,tall ones have the 3d advantage but the short ones need floor area to thrive

i did some in well spaced carrier bags on a south london roof .nice style of bean ,pruning helps keep em tidy

maybe give a bit more space than the packet says and feed em well

Maybe feeding is where I've been going wrong. Not my strong point ... everything tends to get Tomato feed once its crop is visible and I know perfectly well feeding isn't one size fits all Embarassed

Better do a bit of reading up.

beans are usually ok for n as they fix it .a high k and p mix seems to work

for organic pig muck might be good

a good moisture holding soil is nice

light is a major factor for a fast growing plant making big seeds

best i have had were in a rich soil ,full sun and fed with mixture which is very p k and mineral rich but mellowed by fermentation

using a veg growth mix of feed gives big plants but few beans
