Exciting SundayYesterday morning the old chap went out to do the morning feed and came hurrying back saying: "I've just seen Jones (Bantam hen) on the path and there's atiny head poking out from under her wing!"
Now, he always says the animals are nothing to do with him and he's not soft at all, but when I went out (with 3.5 year old grandson in tow) and reported that there were 9 babies there he was more than a little excited!
As Jones has decided that she's free range we got the babies into a spare ark and enticed her in - we have a monumental badger problem here - and went and bought a new ark from a neighbour who's given up chickens.
All birds now happy in their new home, chicks popping about and exploring and eating like there's no tomorrow!
Here are pics. of babies with mum (Silver Spangled Hamburg Bantam from Wombat) and dad (large mixed cockerel, also from Wombat).
Aaaaaahhhhh!

Ahhh bless!
We had a hatch this weekend too. 3 Light Sussex and an LS x Sasso, which should be interesting. The worst part of the hatching business was that I knew I had only given her 5 eggs to sit on, but there were 12(!) under her. One of the Sassos kept hopping in there to lay, and the broody happily accepted them. I had to take them out once the chicks had hatched so she would stop sitting. She fair pecked my hand to bits as I was fishing them out.

They're our first babies here! The grandson was pleased with them: next time he comes they'll be bigger and he can choose one to be 'his' hen. We'll deliver the eggs to him each week!
There's also a Silkie sitting on about a dozen eggs, none of which are hers, and my Indian Runner Bronwen should hatch hers at the end of the week, so it's Baby Bird World here!

Yep, they do have that effect! Looking forward to seeing how many are hens: I could do with a few more layers.

It would have helped if I'd thought to mark the eggs, but I was sure that the other layers couldn't get to the nest......
Oh well, they are all chickens in the end. My favourite this year is a Black Rock x Light Sussex cross. It is all grey and speckeldy with a little fluffy mohican.

The ducks are good at musical nests: the Indian Runner girlie is sitting most of the time, but her friend shares duties. All the eggs are Runners, though. Hmmm...
