Fairy Ring Mushrooms... Anyone picked any yet?

Had my first meanigfu haul of fairy ring mushrooms (Marasmius oreades) yesterday evening. One local field is completely covered with them.

Anyone else had any yet?

No, and I'm not going to, because I don't think I'd ever be confident enough to tell them for certain from something naarsty, even with your help! Sad

I have to say that I share your reservations Bugs Laughing
Theres one on my parents back garden that comes up every year!

They're not so very hard to identify. What's your main concern?

You could mistake one of the toxic Clitocybe species or it, and that wouldn’t be good. Could be fatal.

Shocked Shocked Shocked

Call me picky, but the words "could be fatal" wouldn't appear on my fantasy dinner menu Laughing

The differences seem to be so small between one and the other - and also the fact, I understand, that you could find one in among the other or two rings overlapping, one tasty, one toxic...

I think I'd like to be able to do a comparison between one and the other - if not with real examples, then

deadly - is this shape
not deadly - is that shape

deadly - has this feature
not deadly - has that feature

We did find fairy rings last year, but couldn't be anywhere near certain that they were these. If they're there again this year we'll take a couple and get pics and ask questions, but I am not sure I will be eating them.

I haven't seen any in their usual haunts, mind you the farmer has had cows on my best field all winter, they are off now but will it affect them?

You get a nose for it very fast. I'll go looking for some picks of C. dealbata, see if I can put your fears to rest.

Fair enough.

You'll probably find that a grazed field is 'tuftier', and that sometimes makes them harder to spot, but I'd have thought that you'll still find them.
