FalconryJust discovered that there's a Birds of Prey centre in the next village and wonder if this will be the year to try and learn more in depth about falconry. We had a one day 'experience' at Exmoor Falconry a couple of years back which left us deeply impressed by their wonderful birds.
Any Downsizer falconers?

wouldn't describe myself as 'a falconer' by any stretch of the imagination but i've long been fascinated by it, and did a course once and flew owls, buzzards and my favourites - harris hawks!
I just don't quite have the level of dedication and attention to detail though, it's all quite scientific; you have to weigh them everyday or something to keep them fit for flight and the slightest margin of error could mean months of training and lots of money down the drain - they go downhill fast. finding someone to look after them while your on holiday must be difficult too, who else would be able to weigh them and pull up day old chicks for them and stuff?

It's something I would absolutely love to learn, I find the whole subject fascinating.

I'd love to learn more about the subject. I read a book about a guy with a Harris Hawk who caught over 300 rabbits in a year. That sounds about the most productive way of filling the freezer. OH has said no to pigs. Wonder what she'd say to a Harris Hawk?

Well, if you come down to the Quantocks, the Exmoor Falconry
http://www.exmoorfalconry.co.uk/index.htm will be only half an hour away - and when we were there they had meerkats in the yard.
We had a long hunting walk there with a gorgeous Harris Hawk - she tried to overtake my husband through a narrow gap in the woods and just glanced him with her talons and took a chunk out of his ear - he had a lot of respect for her after that and gave her plenty of space.
