Farm Food and Produce - With a Difference

Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that this week we launched our new website www.fieldsoffood.co.uk . You can auction your farm products by simply putting them on a straight forward for sale listing, on a buy out or make an offer. Its free to join and it is free to list if you list before 31.8.08. You can also set up your own store for free!

Its causing a bit of a stir as the site is quite diverse but sometimes I think doing things a bit different adds spice to life and helps to sell our high quality goods.

I would welcome feedback and hope to see you on the site soon
bagpuss

An interesting venture

what is you plan to single yourselves out from the numerous other websites offering similar services currently?
jocorless

It also doesn't give any information on what feed (in the case of meat) the produce is raised on and/or how intensive (or not) the regime is
Penpethickfarm

Hi you can choose to purchase organic produce if you are keen to know how meat/vegetables have been reared or grown. I take your point about how intensive produce is reared and have tried to take this into account by offering 2 options which are free range and organic. I welcome suggestions on how I could better this.

There are a lot of similar websites on offer at the moment and I am not trying to compete. If my site adds to raising awareness then I hope that's good. I fully support websites such as www.bigbarn.co.uk and www.freerangereview.com. www.fieldsoffood.co.uk is a bit different by offering various ways to purchase. Keep the feedback coming please.
Stacey

Very interesting. Would I be able to use it to sell my gotland skins (when I have some Wink) ?
Penpethickfarm

You are of course welcome to sell your produce on www.fieldsoffood.co.uk
Stacey

Ace Cool We're only down the road from you really Smile

the fees you charge for listing suggest though that this is being run as a money making exercise not an act of good will

in that sense you must have an ideal market of both clients and buyers and I was just wondering which sort of people are you hoping will use the service
Penpethickfarm

Hi Bagpuss, as a small business I will have to charge fees to offer a service and cover costs. If my business was based just on my goodwill how would it be a business?

I don't run my business as a gesture of goodwill Confused

indeed your first reply to my question though basically said you are happy if your website increases peoples awareness and I quote

Which of course doesn't really answer my question of what is your market both in terms of clients and buyers if it is being run as a business which you suggest it is you must have an idea of that

Plus surely you are trying to compete in terms of being successful in the marketplace

If you give us a clearer idea of who you are trying to attract more users might be inclined to use to site both to buy and sell
Penpethickfarm

Good morning again Bagpuss. The site is aimed at smallholders and small producers trying to keep their heads above water, just like me. The customers, I hope, will be those individuals that want quality products at a reasonable price locally.

sounds like a good plan

are you advertising the service anywhere?
Penpethickfarm

EVERY WHERE. The run up to getting the site launched has been intense. We hope to do a press release this week.

do you have much interest, I guess as its just starting it looks a little sparse is terms of products
Penpethickfarm

Hi having only launched this week the interest shown has been brilliant. We are shy of products at the moment but I remember when another aution site commenced with very few listing. Iam confident that people will list to try the service out. At the moment its free and you can't get better than that
Stacey

If I had any skins available at the moment I'd certainly be listing

When you say locally, do you mean local to you in Cornwall?
Penpethickfarm

Hi, no all over the UK. In the advanced search section you can now search for a product anywhere in the country.

Damn, that's where I'm going wrong Wink
Penpethickfarm

Hi everyone, due to a fire the server at www.fieldsoffood.co.uk is down. Everything possible is being done to resume normal business. This is unfortunate as we are a new site. Please accept my apologies Embarassed
Penpethickfarm

Hi our server is now back up. Please take a look at our site Laughing

That link isn't right.
Penpethickfarm

Yes I know thank you. I think I got a too excited. I have taken out the link. If you click on my signature link all is ok
Penpethickfarm

Hi everyone I thought I would give a quick update on www.fieldsoffood.co.uk. In the last 2 weeks 3,000 people have visited the site and google seem to be supporting the amount of interest we are receiving. Its free to buy and sell, its even free to set up a store. We have some interesting items listed and remain positive that the site will become a success.

There are some Welsh counties listed but the list is far from complete.
Penpethickfarm

Thank you so much for the feedback. I will remedy both things by later on today. Please keep the feedback coming it really helps. Using a php script is a totally new area for me but one that I am working hard on to ensure success. I am sorry Wales is not on the list but it will be. Please register later today.
Penpethickfarm

Hi I have spoken to the script writters and Wales will be added
Palms

£15 for a chicken plus p&p!!! Blimey
Penpethickfarm

Ah but not just any chicken. They are free range, fed well and each night go into their large house which is 3ft off the ground, weather proof, fox proof and rat proof. Needless to say even living free range they weigh in at approx 3kg and everyone of my last batch sold. Try one I promise you will understand why chicken was a luxury food in the good old days. Not 2 for a fiver at Tesco's!
Penpethickfarm

Hi, Wales is officially on the map. Sorry Wales Embarassed

Most of us can go to a local butcher and farm shop and get a similar chicken which tastes just as good for between £3.50 and £5 a kg and not have to pay delivery though
Penpethickfarm

Hi yes I agree, we will have to hope that someone lists free range chickens in your area cutting down on food miles. This would be ideal

Quite - I can get a 'normal' size chicken for £5.50 & an enorma-chicken for about £9.00 off the free range farmer in the next village, so not comparing it with Tescos at all Rolling Eyes
sean

To be fair, most of *us* can. Lots of people can't whether because of location/time/inclination.
It's not for me, but good luck with it.
Penpethickfarm

Needed - the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker We have been working hard at Fields of Food spreading the word about our innovative site. We are looking forward to reading articles in the Farmers Guardian, the new Home Farmers magazine and have been included at www.allaboutyou.com/food/channel - the online home of SHE, Good Housekeeping, Prima, Coast, Country Living and House Beautiful. As our membership grows we are keen to ensure that new items are listed. Take a look in the art section at Philip Knaggs drawings. We need listings in all of our categories from the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker to make our site a market place with a difference. If an item is not yet listed take a look in our stores and at our links page.To ensure that you can keep a close eye on current developments why not bookmark www.fieldsoffood.co.uk for future reference Smile

Penpethickfarm

yes you are right. I got a bit carried away sorry Richard. Embarassed

Perhaps I will edit the post
Penpethickfarm

Now edited, thank you for pointing out my over enthusiasm but you really must visit www.fieldsoffood.co.uk
Lloyd

Just had a quick look, but the site doesn't seem beneficial to my smoked foods setup at present.

I can see however a huge potential to your site if you choose to auction basically all the things that Ebay doesn't, ie food, livestock and weapons.
Rob R

You can sell food on ebay, just not alcohol.
Lloyd

Really?...I didn't know that......So could I do an online shop for my smoky commestibles, do you think, Rob? Confused
Rob R

Probably, this is their policy on food anyway: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/food.html
Lloyd

Thanks mate, a quick look found me only one site selling a rare smoked Spanish cheese, so will be talking imminently with my website designer about twisting his arm into doing me an Ebay shop too.
This is definitely the time of year to push this, several farm shops locally are now receiving stocks from me as Christmas rushes towards us.

Cheers!
